So I showed my mum the totse thread about Christianity hijacking myths. She couldn’t come up with any argument for it, went quiet and walked away. The next day, she goes into Christian overdrive, playing loud Christian music, watching Christian television, reading the bible more than she normally does. I ask her what she thinks about the hijacking myths again and she just ignores me. WTF?
It is an interesting relationship you seem to have with your mommy!

I think you should slap the bitch for not knowing her place and answering you. Then tell 'er to make you a sandwich.
Its more Judaism and the Old Testament Bible hijacking myths, but thats what it was, a collection of historical and oral traditions which the Hebrew people had picked up over time. These stories are probably older than the civilizations they were originally picked up from. Does your mommy know how you feel about religion?

Dude, stop with the ‘mommy’. Yes, she knows I’m an atheist.

Camera pans in to child's bedroom: Mom walks up to child's computer, glances at top of page to find "totse com - A safe haven for visionaries and paranoids." Mom silently walks away with head down.
Camera zoom to 20 inches: I wonder what has Mom so thoughtful now? Hmmmm... And now she reading her Bible more than she useta. Hmmmm... this is weird. I wonder whatever COULD be the problem with that woman?

There's evidence for most things, and against them
If you ignore evidence against you, then in your mind, you're right
Something like that

"Pretend as they will to scientific credentials, the anti-evolution propagandists are always religiously motivated, even if they try to buy credibility by concealing the fact. In most cases, they know deep down what to believe because their parents recommended an ancient book that tells them what to believe. If the scientific evidence learned in adulthood contradicts the book, there must be something wrong with the scientific evidence. Since all the radiometric dating methods agree that the earth is thousands of millions of years old, something obviously has to be wrong with all radiometric dating methods. The holy book of childhood cannot be, must not be, wrong."

Christianity having myths similar to other religions/peoples can just as easily be used as evidence for the truth of the bible as evidence against it.

The Bible denounces "pagan" religions. If the Bible is based on these pagan religions we have a major problem.

The Holy Grail is based on a Celtic belief of magical items with amazing properties, such as the Horn Of Plenty which is full of food and never runs out. Ask your mother about that.
When did your mumzi find out about your athiesm? What was her original reaction?

Not really. Thats like claiming that because the Lord of the Rings takes inspiration from pre-existing European mythology, that there is evidence Middle Earth actually existed.

For all we know the pagan religions could be based on the true one.

Adrenochrome, as I suspected when you told me of her reaction to one of MY threads, she doesn't know her religion all that well. She went into "defense" mode. Burying her head in the sand, in other words.

That's the reaction most people are going to have when you show them something that spits in the face of something they've spent their whole lives believing in.
No one ever wants to admit "Damn, I've devoted the past 35 years to a bunch of bullshit" and so they wont even entertain any idea that could end up discrediting their doctrine.
Why take the time to learn about something and find out you may be wrong when you can just ignore it and go on convincing yourself you're right, whether or not you actually are?

The 'true' one? If you're referring to Judeo-Christianity, then this is simply not possible.

I was speaking of the Judeo-Christian one for the purpose of this thread, how is it not possible?

Pagan Polytheistic religions were based on the Original concept and religion. They began humanizing and creating imagery to represent aspects of God. Each aspect later was thought as an individual being and then they were seperated. God is The God of the River and The God of the Forest, turned to the God of the river and the God of the forest, each becoming individuals with their own history and origins.
I just read over what I wrote in this thread and it lakes coherency/though. Sometimes I enjoy playing devil's advocate.
