Is the Earth just a fouled nest?

Basically, I am wondering whether you think environmentalism is worth it to save our planet, or if our planet is just a fouled nest and instead of following a 'green' road back to the Dark Ages we should just focus on Space colonisation etc. instead.

Personally I am split between the two, so I was wondering what you think.

Problem is that we need a safe 'base' rich in resources to build all this mega technology even if we did want to just abandon the planet.

I'm all for space exploration/colonisation but we shouldn't use it as a way out of all the problems we have caused here on earth.
