That's fucking Metal/music-based. This is coming from a guy who knows fuck all about anime, so there might already been a really famous one I'm missing, but all the ones I know of that're even remotely music related are Gravitation and BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad...but they suck (IMO). So yeah, think Dethklok, but anime. Or hell, I'd even settle for something outrageously over the top with guitar laser swords...
Any help is greatly appreciated :P

Watch FLCL. It's music based, with a soundtrack by The Pillows. Also, there are gas powered guitars which are used to smack people in the head and open up inter-dimensional gated to pull robots through!!!

This. It's not heavy metal, but is strongly influenced by rock.
It's just an awesome anime. It's only 6 episodes, so even if it ain't exactly what you're looking for it's still worth sitting through.
Cowboy Bebop has a lot of jazz, and once again it's awesome. :/

i can think of a few anime series with a hard-hitting heavy metal soundtrack, but nothing like what you described. well, besides metalocalypse. :p

There is a soundtrack with bands such as Coal Chamber, Apartment 26, Billy Idol, Monster Magnet, Pantera, System of a Down, Queens of the Stone Age, Puya, and other prominent heavy metal bands.
I seriously doubt it.
