Okay so as some of you may have read before, I'm a total noob at anime for the most part. I really only wanna watch movies, I don't want to start a series or watch a movie where I won't know what the fuck is going on if I haven't seen every episode. I really like Akira and Metropolis, GITS was also pretty good. So if something in your head pops up when you say "If he liked Akira and Metropolis, I bet he'd like X, Y, or Z," lemme know. Thanks again.

Hmmm... you might like Macross Plus. It's a series, but it's short, only 4 episodes I believe. There's also a version that has those four episodes spliced together into a movie. Lots of action, pretty decent story, though it's been a long time since I've seen it.
You might also want to try Jin-Roh, great animation, made by the same guy who did GitS I think. IIRC it has kind of a slow plot though, real political type stuff.

You could try the Studio Ghibli films. Or the Cowboy Bebop movie. I haven't seen anything but Akira on your list, so you should probably wait for other opinions before you do something drastic.

I've heard of Cowboy Bepop a friend of mine used to watch the show. But that was awhile back. If I watched the movie, would I be able to understand it or more importantly enjoy it?

Yeah the movie and the show are independent from each other. The show primarily deal with them bounty hunting, and then it gets into there history and some stuff like that. The movie just about them doing a random bounty hunt. So it's easy to follow. I saw the movie before the show too.

I'd recommend anything by Hizao Miyazaki (sp?) and as someone's already mentioned Studio Ghibli. Graveyard of the Fireflies is an excellent war-time drama tear-jerker, and the Neon Genesis Evangelion series is highly recommended (although the first of the two movies that ends the series is fucked up beyond belief). If you have access to an interlibrary loan program (or a complete set at your own local libraries), I'd also recommend the Battle Royale manga (movie version isn't anime) for pure blood fun, action and T&A.

My friend had a book called Battle Royal (not manga). It was about a bunch of kids who go to an island and they have to fight each other. Any similarities?

Book is based off the manga, I believe. I've read both, and found the book kind of lacking, as it gets a little curt and isn't really able to display the depth of each character as well as the manga does.
Manga is based off the movie, I think, and copies of it are a bitch to get through any library since it's supposedly banned in the US or some bullshit. I'm sure you could download it from somewhere or buy a copy through a retailer.
The concept is pretty wicked, and it's got a lot more depth than expected from a book about kids killing each other than you might expect. At least until the last few books where it starts to go off on the perviness and TnA.

Ghost Hound is a show currently airing. I believe the story writer is the same of that of GITS, and the same director from Lain. It's a sci-fi/supernatural suspense anime that I'm finding to be quite interesting.
X TV
Monster
One Piece
Higurashi no naku koro ni and Higurashi no naku koro ni kai (second season)
Berserk (note: if you like it, look to the manga for the fuller version of the story)

If you liked Spirited Away you should check out Princess Mononoke(sp?) and Naussica of the Vally of the Wind.

Princess Mononoke is a good movie, but a slightly bizarre ending. Haven't seen the movie version of the Valley of the Wind manga, but the manga was excellent. Add Howl's Moving Castle to that list.
A note on some of these movies - they come across as somewhat childish, but they're much more adult than most American kiddie cartoons you'll find these days. Kind of like fairy tales with modern twists. If you can't live without the fighting, heavy drama or tna, you might not like them.

Mostly stuff on recommendation, these days. I made the mistake of picking up anything I could find on the shelves as far as Anime went (way back), because our local video store had such a shit selection of them. Thanks to a few of the most horrifyingly stupid pieces of anime shit I've ever seen, it was not an uplifting experience. I can't remember the other ones, but one that really stuck out was Wicked City. Fucking tentacle hentai type shit, everyone including the villain bangs the heroine, and then they fight a giant fanged vagina in the end. Absolute shit.

well I heard that there's a Star Wars hentai movie; StarBallz....haha it makes fun of DBZ, Sailor Moon, etc...I have to see that haha...thx for reminding me

but regaining composure...you sound like one of my counselors from HS (I'm a senior now). Happened ~1 week ago, I was discussing anime with an acquaintance, she entered the discussion about subs, she mentioned that many were doing that (Watching subs) she said a student did that in the past for a video, ~1997 I think she said. She said it was this girl on this board, naked, chopped, etc. After asking her more questions I determined it was probably guro. She said she was running to pull the plug. not turn the TV off, pull the plug...hahaha.
She said that Anime (specfically Hentai haha; she didn't know term) was degrading to women (well, YES!). But I countered, mentioning that some of that happens with males (didn't say details; but yaoi and futa comes to mind). she said, yes I shit you not: There needs to be a criminalization or stopping of hentai! HAHAHAHAH. When I mentioned it was free speech (and it's impossible and unpopular to stop that shit where it happens the most) , she said there needs to be a AWARENESS CAMPAIGN directed at Hentai...FUCKING LOLOLOLOL. I snickered so bad.
imagine the hentai campaign..
AWARENESS: DID YO KNOW YOUR CHILDREN MAY BE WATCHING PERVERSE JAPANESE ANIMATION (KNOWN AS "HENTAI") INVOLVING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO: TRANSSEXUALS. SADISM. MASOCHISM. BESTIALITY ('FURRIES') PEDOPHILIA. INCEST. GORE AND VIOLENCE. THIS IS AGAINST ALL WE STAND FOR....(okay; I'm going overboard).
A war on Hentai....no shitting dick nipples :( (yes they exist)
And the chans go fucking insane.
But you stick to the 'mainstream' and not too far from it, ok. Heard of Legend of the Galactic Heroes? Pure pwnage :D

Age range is correct. As far as conventions go, due to location I haven't had the opportunity to do it in the past, and not really looking for it that much in the future. My interests are more along the lines of comics nerd'dom, with a bit of gaming on the side.
You don't like tentacle rape, ehh?
I can deal with pornographic elements, nudity, sex and the whole shebang, but it was just kinda gross. I'm not sure it even qualified as hentai. I've heard there's worse, material like Bible Black, but I've never been into anime enough to go looking. I take stuff on recommendation, but mostly my watching has been geared to asian material like Oldboy recently, stuff that's been recommended to me by a movienerd.
but regaining composure...you sound like one of my counselors from HS (I'm a senior now).
Note that I don't have any *real* problem with hentai and crap like it. I just don't watch it. I find it the equivalent of watching scat porn. If that's what you're into, have at it. I'd have to agree though, some of it can be pretty degrading to women... but there's plenty of it that's degrading to the human race in general as well. Fair play, y'know?
But you stick to the 'mainstream' and not too far from it, ok. Heard of Legend of the Galactic Heroes? Pure pwnage :D
Some of the asian stuff I've gotten recently isn't terribly mainstream, but I suppose stuff like NGE is. I'll have to check out LoGH if I can find it.
Speaking of that, do you d/l your anime?
Strictly movie rentals and internet library loans. My computer isn't up to snuff for d/l'ing.

You're fucking cool :D. There are 25-30 year old males who play video games. Well I knew that, some of my teachers in HS do that and admit it as does a cousin of mine. You're a 1337 gam3r then. Pure Pwnage, sir!
But yes...comics, I forgot those. Mainly I have Star Wars comics haha (See name)

Strictly movie rentals and internet library loans. My computer isn't up to snuff for d/l'ing.you don't d/l then...erm; ask that movienerd then about if he has a copt of LOGH...that has never been released in the US (subs or dubs); some fansubs have been released off the internet. Someone might have a copy/etc. Or go to a local barbershop and ask him to burn the DVDs...I wonder how much it'll cost; ~110 episodes in total, 4 seasons...worth it though :D
Still watching it.
EDIT: with the barbershop thing,a guy there HAS to sell bootlegs, or know a guy who sells bootlegs...ask him to burn the series "Legend of the Galactic Heroes"
tell him he can find it on mininova (might make price less).
and well this is illegal so be careful...then again police officers buy bootlegs and it happens in most barbershops likely.

*Ahem* I do believe SWF is referring to Black barbershops. Ah, yes, it's a black thing, don't go to a white barbershop for this purpose. Also, the police officers that buy bootlegs in barbershops are most likely, very likely in fact, Black. I'm sorry, I just wouldn't feel right if I let you tarnish the good image(not counting Black areas) of police officers.
