Hallo! New to this section.
anyways, I'm a grade 12 AP chem student who is in a very small class with a really cool teacher. He says if we find a decent thing to do we can do it, no bombs though :) (One kid in the class has an obsession with them...). So basically what I am looking for is a bit more advanced lab then the usual you would expect to find in a high school chemistry class!

This mean fireworks are IN, pretty much anything is a go, I just have to run it by the teacher.

Have access to many chemicals, can order in if need be and we have a fume hood and the like. Thank you!

I dunno you could make a Giant snake like volcano with ammonium dicromate or you could explain a redox reaction with a exotic thermite mixture using potasium permanganite and glycerin as a ignition or magnesium ribbon if you have it you might even be able to go so far as to do small tests with ammonia triodide you could do a very small synth of a organic peroxide like methyl ethyl ketone peroxide or if comfortable acetone peroxide both are primary explosives

you could make small things like a star mix or powder and make a "powder rainbow" and use various salts and chlorine donors to produce a burning rainbow of color ..

could just make smoke mix a combination of potassium nitrate and sugar

you could even do the classic gummy bear explostion demo which is esentially a test tube of potassium clorate held by clamp on a labstand and a bunsun burner used to heat and turn the KClO3 to a liquid and then a gummy bear is dropped in with a violant reaction

or in my case i used a smoke when i was in school back when smoke was not so "tabu"

some other idea's might be simple nitrations of certain things maybe compare them i dunno lol but you state your a "AP" chem student this leads me to guess you might be in alberta ? as far as i know there the only one who uses the "Advance Placment scale" most people use IB or the 14 24 30 scale

just curious as im in alberta :P

You could steam-distill the aroma out of something (flowers, orange peels), extract it with ether and then distill off the ether to isolate the aroma's.

Or, staying with smelly stuff, oxidise buthanol with permanganate and HCl to create butyric acid.

Failing that: anything involving whistle mix, maybe some homecook sparklers.

Sorry mate. I definately haven't forgotten about this topic, I've been checking it everday. All of these things sound interesting and I've done some research on all of them. I haven't had class for the past two days so I will be talking to him about some of them (no butyric acid :)) tomorrow. I appreciate all the effort very much. After next week we only have class once a week and we will be doing a lab in that class so for the next 3-4 weeks it is labs only.

Thats a fun one I had a video somewhere when I did this for my chemistry class. Its a very simple thing to do and make plus its pretty bad ass seeing fire turn from red to orange to yellow to lime green to green blue to blue to purple. Everyones already made some pretty good suggestions hopefully your teacher is really cool and lets you do most the shit suggested. I had a teacher that let me do demos and teach the class and I got to do most of the stuff said in this thread and WAY more. Id hold off on asking about things like NI3, and AP and MEKP till you know he will be cool with it since he did say no explosives and they are all primarys so not so great.

A very good simple yet totally kick ass one is nitrations. Especially big nitrations or a few small ones. Because then you have plenty of fun ass Nitrocellulose to play with and its something easy and not to dangerous to do as long as you pay attention and don't let runaway occur its pretty much harmless. I used to do it all the time make big ass 100-200 gram batchs and just have fun all day.

Thermites a good one as well its pretty simple and not to dangerous. The KNO3/Sugar smoke mix is good and easy. Zinc plus iodine is a fun one just mix it up add water and you get a pretty purple cloud(need be done under fume hood). Or Zinc and sulfur mixed in right ratio and when ignited it creates a nice flash of greenish fire, it can be hard to ignite if not made properly in right proportions though. Also another fun one is liquid colored flames, take some methanol mix in the coloring agent such as SrNO3 for red or LiNO3 for a nicer red, or boric acid for emerald green or theres other ones as well its pretty bad ass.

NI3 is a fun one to do for classes but dangerous and a VERY EXTREMLY SENSITIVE explosive so he might not let you. Also Silver Acetylide is fun and easy and not super sensitive and makes a nice little bang for a tiny ammount. Hydrogen ballons are fun and you have to be retarded to not be able to do that. Im trying to figure out other shit I did for my classes. If I think of other good ones ill let you know theres a lot of cool shit that can be done. Im kind of doubting your teacher would actually let YOU do the shit yourself since you don't have the experince or knowledge i did when my teacher let me teach class and actually do the shit myself but maybe theres been a few of us lucky enough to have teachers cool like that. The main thing man LEARN YOUR shit and prove your responsible and know what your talking about and that your interested in chemistry not just a bomb nut faggot like the other kid in your class.
