Hey guys, im not into anime all that much, but im wondering if anyone can recommend a good one with relatively simple dialogue which i can listen to in order to practice japanese. I brought a couple of Naruto episodes but they are pretty hard. I was thinking maybe one thats made for kids would be good, but not stuff thats gonna bore the crap out of me.
any ideas?

I'd definitely be interested in this aswell.

But in the meantime, you should just try to watch as much as possible. I've watched like 7 anime series and when I first started learning the language I realised that my pronounciation was really, really good. There's also several basic words which I've picked up throughout.

If you're watching basic animes you might not really enjoy it, but if you're watching good shit, then it's going to give you the drive to keep learning, and hearing the language everyday will be a kinda decent substitution for being in Japan and haivng conversations every day.

But yeah, sorry I can't really recommend anything. :(

i kinda agree with revvy on this one.

if you watch lots of subtitled anime, you tend to pick up bits and phrases here and there. it's a good idear.

if you're looking for something less mature, maybe for schoolkids...dunno. i'll have to look around.

i don't think you'd like anime for little kids though. it would probly drive you crazy and then i'd be seeing in the news how some guy flipped out and murdered shitloads of people while screaming phrases from hello kitty. then there'd be this thing about how anime is worse for kids than grand theft auto and there'd be restrictions placed on that stuff and then i'd have problems getting my daily dosage of shotacon and i'd probly go crazy and kill lots of people myself.

*shivers at that thought*

my body count would be soooo much higher though. ;)

tengen toppen gurren lagaan is kinda childish whilst still being watchable, but it's still not exactly simple....

If you can't find anything else, you might wanna go with this.

oh! super milk-chan might be something you'd wanna get into. it also gives you lots of references to japanese culture, as well as having somewhat simple dialogue.

Even though it will make you feel really, really gay, Bottle Fairy will teach you shit.

Why not?

And what decent Japanese dramas do you have to recommend?! (Which are easily download/streamable) :D

Anime doesn't always use "proper" Japanese. Also learning from subtitles is a bad idea because some subbers are lazy or certain phrases don't translate well and they just make something up that fits the situation. Live Action Dramas/movies push for realism so they use proper speech. Also on the sub issue, you're learning from a translation so its not very accurate.

Sorry I don't have any I can recommend.

I don't think the subs really matter when you're trying to learn Japanese; it's more important for you to recognise what you hear. When you realise you can actually understand some stuff without referring to the subs, it's really encouraging and gives you that extra boost to do your next lesson.

Don't try to learn Japanese through Japanese television; anime or otherwise.

Pimsleur coupled with The Rosetta Stone and a basic understanding of hiragana and katakana will be far better than anything you can learn from high pitched screaming Japanese voice actors. Japanese men and women speak differently anyway, and this is enhanced in anime. You may pronounce words like they do on the show, but in reality, your dialect makes you sound homosexual.

Pimsleur's amazing.

Haha, this puts an image in my head of some fanboy who learned all of his Japanese from the "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" and then tries it out in real life to the general amusement of all.

Characters on japanese TV hardly ever talk like normal people.

If you spoke Japanese like them people would think you were fucking weird.

Which is why I get really irked when fanboys try to show off their knowledge of the language with stupid catchphrases they've learned through their viewing that don't make any sense.

To be honest, it'd be like trying to learn how to fight from watching The Power Rangers.

Download one of those language guides off the net if you want to learn Japanese.

All you'll get from watching anime is a whole lot of 'Desu' and 'Omae o kurosu'.
