Given that you have run a computer to view an ebook, I've often wondered whether in the long they are actually worse than standard books in terms of CO₂ production.

Good question. I have heard of an ebook that only uses energy when changing its display. It doesn't use an LCD. I can't remember the name of it, but if I find it I'll post a link. That ebook should be less polluting than paper.
