Wondering what I should wear

I could get a black wool tailcoat for $190
I could get a black velvet suit jacket $50

Whichever one I go with... I don't know how to make it work.

Tailcoat, definitely. You don't know how to make it work? haha... It's pretty straight-forward :p Black top, black trousers, black shoes. You can choose what colour the shirt is, just make sure it's the same colour as your pocket-hankercheif. I've always thought the white shirt, white waistcoat and white bow-tie (or normal tie) works well although you don't see a lot of people wearing it. Most people go with a standard black suit, black tie set-up.

You could always go like this (http://www.21stcenturykilts.com/images/kiltsuit.jpg), that will make you sure to stand out :p

Don't forget a top hat ;)

I wore a kilt to my school prom. Was awesome, though I wasn't the only person. By chance, someone else did too.

Rawr.

A guy wore a gold suit to my grad dinner/dance. It was really shiny, and a little scary.

Go with the black tailcoat. Very classy. And isn't the pocket square supposed to match the tie?

it can match either or, if you're wearing a white shirt with a black tie and black jacket, the best choice for a pocket square would be white

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Belated closure.

I got the tail coat. Found a shitty clip bow tie at a Chinese shop. Wore my nice white shirt with the sexy embroidery on the front (it's not as gaudy as it sounds.) I looked cooler than 75% of the guys there who were content with wearing their general "job interview" suits.

I also got the velvet coat and put some awesome shiny silver buttons on it. I now wear it for street/casual purposes and command great respect. I'm also going to find some way to work the tail-coat into my regular wardrobe seeing as I paid so much for it and steampunk seems to be creeping into vogue. Though I'd try and make it look scruffy/grungy at the same time.
