Do they substitute jail time for money? Do you get to just declare bankruptcy? Do they just take money from you whenever you get it until it's all paid off?

There are no debtors' prisons in America. A plaintiff tends to not ask an amount that would cause the defendant to file for bankruptcy because they won't receive as much if the defendant goes into bankruptcy.

Tthey put in garnishments. Also this includes freezing of your bank accounts too. And it just isn't money that is out into Garnishments. They can take away your tangible property up to the ammount that you owe.
