View Full Version : Clean Break.. Where?

So I am looking for a nice clean break from whatever is happening in my life. I need to move.

I'm thinking either the States or Canada.
Say I have US $15k to start off with.

I have experience in construction/earthworks. Excavators, bulldozers, graders and dump trucks. How would this set me off?
Any place in particular would good for my "skills"?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Alberta is slowing down apparently, not too sure as to what extent. Still, I'm sure there will be no shortage of work for someone able to operate heavy equipment.

There is still lots of work to go around in Western Canada, be it Sask, Alberta, or BC.

if you know how to and are willing to work consider the carribean. if you manage to find a decent (non-islander) to employ you, you should be set. im in st croix of the usvi but any island that is developing will do

Your location says hell, so I'm assuming you're in Australia.

If that's the case ignore my next ideas: Work in the mines in Western Australia. Someone as qualified as you could make $100,000+.

Otherwise check out places like Dubai. Lots of money to be made for skilled workers.

You can pretty much land a job anywhere in the US with those skills. A lot of people say the economy is slowing down and jobs are slimming but I don't see it. Everyone around me is hiring.

Get a local driving job. You'll be home daily and make a decent wage.

Last month +250.000 unemployed.

My advice is to not run away for your problems.

Mines do not sound good to me. 7 day shifts and 3 days off... Same people day in day out. No chance to see someone new. Working with people 6 days a week is bad enough for me. Working and LIVING with them all, its even worse.

You always need people in construction. Jobs are thining out, but it's most those who deal with money, infrastructure seems to always have a good market.

I live in the fastest growing part of NorthWest Arkansas and it seems like something new is being built everyday! If your good at construction and have all the certifications that you say you do the U.S. wouldn't be a bad idea.

To be perfectly honest I've heard that construction workers have been among the hardest hit by the recession in the good ol' US of A. On the other hand, there aint nothin like a big American city. $15,000 sounds peachy. Rent a shit apartment and start going to school so your can put your engineering skills to lucrative uses.

But...forget what I said. Fza is 100% correct. Face your problems.

He probably just wants a new dirtbike track :(

If anyone can dg up proof that construction workers in the US are suffering, I'd like to see it. Not sarcastic, just curious. My trade is somewhat related so it would be good to know.

Sooo...? You just discount all the stopped jobs & other stories negative about construction related activities as the news media trying to sell ads?

I haven't discounted them, I haven't seen them. At least, not for construcution in particular.

Well the military could be a good option during this recession, decent pay and free post secondary could get you into a good position to have a fresh start. I'd wait till the Iraq war is over though if I were you, if you're interested that is.
