View Full Version : Eradicating Feral Species

In Australia we have, what I consider to be, a huge introduced species problem.
We have wild horses, pigs, camels, rabbits, cats, dogs, birds and fish...rats and mice.
They really need to fuck off and I was wondering how possible reducing the numbers significantly is in reality. And ways of doing so.
Free-for-all hunting sessions!
No, seriously. If Australia had a hunting culture like the US, you wouldn't have a problem with feral animals.
A combination of the above to answers could work for certain animals. Eg rabbits could be hunted for either the meat or sport side of things.
Eradicating an invasive species from a small area is hard let alone an entire continent. Of course Australians did try biological control (introduction of predators) to get rid of species but that didn't exactly turn out to well....

Get into the fur/pelt trade?
I do a fair bit of killing European starlings, English sparrows, and pigeons.
Living in the city with a pellet gun and a bird feeder makes for a good bit of recreation; killing an invasive species is just a bonus.
On Saturday mornings you can find me in the kitchen, slat in the back door open, with an occasional *POP!* noise before one of the little bastards hits the ground.

Haha, I expect Abo's say something similar about whitey.

As gforce mentioned that would help with some species but not with ones such as the cane toad, which is causing devastating damage to the native wildlife.

Good call.
How about this for a joke? "I'm sure they have experts working on this problem"

If .22s and shotguns were legal without a licence then maybe the numbers would be slightly lower. I doubt that there are enough people in Australia to shoot every single rabbit. The government attempted introducing myxomatosis to kill all of the rabbits. Some were resistant to the virus and all of the rabbits we see today are descendants from those few rabbits.
My bet is that a new virus will be discovered and it will be more effective. Human knowledge of diseases is far greater now than it was in the 1950s.

Problem is that some rabbits will always end up being immune to whatever virus we give them. Think along the lines of the problems we have with growing antibiotic resistance in bacterium.

The only answer is to release another invasive exotic species.
How about Ligers?

Damn, I don't mind you shotting birds or having your fun that way - but that's pretty fucking cheap.
Come to Pittsburgh. We'll find a nice woodsy area, and put up a big ole' salt lick.
Then, shoot any of the deer who go near it.

Foolish humans. You cannot resist. You cannot fight back. We are the All who is One, we are everywhere, and we are coming.

Humans are the most damaging and hardest to control of all invasive species.
Perhaps we should contemplate their removal from Australia.

So you'd rather let the feral animals breed and be disease infested. Sick bastard.
In San Antonio Texas for example, near the tea garden which is near the zoo, you can see tons of feral cats that have mange and various other diseases, and they spread them to other animals because people are too stupid to feed them poison rather than regular food.
Yeah, humans are fucked up but we're the ones that have to clean up our messes.

Yes, I would rather have them die naturally than die at the hands of sadistic animal control specialists.
It is in no way sadistic to accept nature for what it is. It's in the natural order of things for organisms to die.
And no, we don't have to do anything. If we would let the animals exist in their natural state they would die off or thrive, depending on their environment and the animals ability to adapt.

I personally take it apon myself after crossing the border into QLD to mow down as many Cane toads as possible by swerving hectically in my car.
Oh and also I swerve to hit them introduced toads aswell...

You know when you kill a cane toad, seven more rise in their place?

The part you're ignoring is that feral animals do not fit into nature, because of humans. They cannot be natural anymore because humans have corrupted them. Letting them live with diseases causes them to suffer more, but you have this idea that they should be left to roam freely with their diseases and suffering because that would be "natural" when it's really not natural at all. Domestic cats and domestic dogs do not have any "natural state".
You are such a hypocrite. You're like all those faggots that preach about how it's wrong to eat meat but continue to pollute the earth and buy products like rice which fucks up the environment and various other environment fucking up products. You're a moron, a moron that does not help the earth at all and only damages it. Hypocritical moron. You need to be shot.
