I kinda want to get me a Leather jacket, but unfortunately where I lived is plagued by surfy type styles and the only people who wear leather are Goth’s and Punk’s, both of which I want no incidental association with. What would be the type of getup that best compliment's a leather jacket? I always liked the Velvet Underground style but it may be to urban for the philistines around here.

Cool man, but you're thinking about it in reverse. You want to base your outfit around your leather jacket not vice versa. What style of jacket are we talking about here?

That's what I was looking at. Like I said I love the VU/artsy New Yorker type look but hate the goth/punk look.
Also I am maybe going to spend some of next year in either London or New York and what getup would look good in that kinda location?

Ah, now that's a nice, classic looking motorcycle jacket. I have a very similar one. I live in Australia as well so I know what you mean about people automatically assuming you are some punk/goth if you rock a bit of leather - unfortunately many of them are going to think that regardless. Fortuently, when you travel - especially to places like London - you can dress how you want without people batting an eye because there is always going to be far more severely dressed people ha ha
You want some tight, tough jeans. Black or dark blue or washed out light blue if you want to throw it out there. Black is a good standard though. You can't go wrong with a pair of well-fitting black jeans. Jean in general. It's impossible.
You need a good pair of leather boots. Maybe something with a buckle on it or a zipper up the side. Ankle length. Also, a pair of white plimsolls. Just plain white canvas shoes. They will get dirty - just throw them in the wash. Seriously, that is all the shoes you will need.
Underneath you want some basic colour v necks or something with a loose kind of neck, get a couple in a few sizes, some looser, some tighter. Maybe some old band shirts or something with a bit of detail.
And get a scarf to, just a plain black or something with stripes. Good quality. And not an Arab Kieff or whatever they are called.
Think Libertines. Think archetypal Velvet Underground look.
This will get you anywhere looking cool and practical.
Bit of a stretch from your original question but hey. I'll post you some photos later.

He, thats a good idea, sound's kinda Bob Dylan as well. Just need me some beatle boots. I'm only going to be in this country for a few years more anyway so may as well get some nicer stuff. Thanks
I thought we were talking about stylish leather jackets. I love leather jackets (http://www.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=17551&storeId=12555&categoryId=122944&parent_category_rn=38994&productId=953806&langId=-1).

Meh. Each to their own. That jacket is okay but 'hoody leather jacket' doesn't really say 'stylish' to me. It says, 'I'm the type of guy that wears Crocks'.

Diesel's jacket was quite nice, but I didn't particularly fancy the hoodie. As for my two cents:

I'm surprised. The jacket looks much better than the description may imply. :p
I have a leather jacket that may be deemed as a "formal" jacket, but it's really nice to wear whenever. It's soft leather, not that stiff biker stuff, and it's not really decorated except for the chainmail on the zipper. It's pretty plain. If I can, I'll get a pic sometime here soon.

Picture doesn't do it justice as my camera + lighting sucks
Collar can also be changed so it looks more like a blazer

A good leather jacket should be a staple in everyone's closet, that along with jeans and a white shirt (which all go well together). They're easy, comfortable and classic. Just make sure that if it isn't real leather, it's not too shiny.
Edit: And long, long + leather instantly = gothfag.

Jeeze I fucking regret buying that jacket. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice jacket but after trying it on if looks and feel's all wrong. Plus I don't have a moterbike (yet) and It would look wierd in a casual setting without one. That sight didn't have the one I really want... pity

I know what thats like. I have a couple now. The first one I stumbled onto by chance and I liked it so I bought it. After having my old one for several years it was really beat up so I started looking for a new one that I liked. I was looking for 2 years until I found one I really liked. I found several I liked, but they didn't feel right so I didn't get them. I personally think its a bad idea to get stuff like this over the internet for that exact reason. If it doesn't feel like it fits right, you just wasted your money.

Aye, Pretty much. I once bought a guitar over the internet which I've never played. Big mistake.
About the only clothes you can order over the interwebs are t-shirts, jeans, shit like that. Even then you might not know what you're getting.

Leather jackets are sick, but I was never able to find one that I liked, so I just Frankenstein'd this one out of a couple other leathers.

I've been meaning to give it pockets for like two years, but I'll probably never get around to it.
