View Full Version : UK - a sinking ship

I stated in a previous thread that I thought the UK was like a sinking ship. I would like to hear your opinions and ideas of places to go.
The reasons for wanting to leave the UK are listed below:
- A massively overpriced currency that will all but collapse soon, increasing unemployment
- Increasingly a police state where old ladies are arrested on anti terrorism charges and CCTV is everywhere. My DNA and fingerprints are on record even though I have not been charged with a crime. E- mails, phone calls and texts are monitored without our knowledge.
- Socially we are very backward, with a huge underclass who thinks it is cool to be stupid and with increasing numbers of welfare dependant popullation.
- Massively increasing government deficits that WILL have to be paid back. Most likely by making me work till I die
- High cost of living such as utility bills
- Bad weather. I wouldn't mind so much if we at least got some sun
- Bad work/life as a norm in the UK and only set to get worse as the recession hits.
- The popullation are so stupid they elect idiots because they look nice or because they've always voted for the party.
Those are all I can think of at the moment.

They're about the only ray of sunshine in this country!
my early morning swim would not be the same without the hordes of croatian and polish girls. english girls are too lazy to get up in the morning to swim. I'd rather look at the curvaceous arse of the 21 year old slovakian au pair than the wrinkled sagging arse of some geriatric old fart while i do my lengths thank you very much.
answer to OP. we've got to work hard to make this whole shit-boat a better place, I know this country's going to shit, YOU know it, we need to fucking look after our shit, save money, work hard, fuck it if you really want to avoid this reccession then join the army for 4 years, or go to university, when you come out the reccession will be all but over. and joining the army is not THAT bad an idea since you're no longer going to be fighting for george bush, it's Obama now.
Meh, as a place, I like England.
No matter how bad the weather, or the politics, there's nowhere else I'd rather live.

I will always love the UK and i will defend it when i think its being unjustly attacked. but i make you right, this place is starting to suck more then usual. however most places suck for one reason or another. that's why a lot of the people there immigrate here. I've been trying to get people together for a revolution but they're either brain dead racist fagots or religious nut sacks who want one nation under God/Allah/Buddha/Spaghetti monster. so i say find somewhere with a better average intelligence then this place, that doesn't need to worry about securing fossil fuels and if possible produces large quantities of alcohol/weed/fit women. i haven't been able to find it yet, so if you do let me know.

Amsterdam, as a city, mainly sells weed, mushrooms and sex. Legally.
Where else does that happen?
The weed ranges between okay and good. Nothing exceptional I'd say.
I've got a better high from smoking soap bar than some of the weed over there that is said to be amazing

I dare say 60% of the residents are from an English speaking country, and the rest speak English anyway because of the tourism.

Sinking - perhaps, but I don't think it's too late to patch up the holes and pump out the seawater. If we can get the Labour government out before they get their way with ID cards and the national DNA database then we have hope of bringing about change. If not then I honestly don't know what we could do :(.

I think it would take a lot to change the rot that's set in.
This idea that the UK is going to the shitter has been about for god knows how many years. I notice though, the OP didn't go for the usual lines of immigrants taking my job , so it's not all of the usual caliber we can expect from [i]The Sun. What do you want in a country OP? Social spending, or a lack of it? Western Europe generally is a nice place to live, in terms of governments and social systems, with countries doing well on nearly every mainstream government model we have. You're spoilt for choice. If it's price you care about though, the US and Canada are the place to go if you want to live cheaply (or Eastern Europe, but you may have trouble making your fortune there).

a huge underclass who thinks it is cool to be stupid and with increasing numbers of welfare dependant popullation.
There does seem to be a strand of anti-intellectualism in England that I find troublesome. That being said, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I love the English weather, houses and southwestern countryside. They suit my temper.

Northern countryside is better. And by northern I mean the penines. Not Manchester
I don't particulairly mind the anti-intellectualism, the stupider they are the wider the devide between me and them.

Between the extreme cost of living and the rising Muslim population I say the UK is fucked. Get out while you can. Why don't you come to Canada?
Seriously, for the cost of a small flat in the UK you could get a spacious apartment or rent a house in some of our cities. Plus food costs next to nothing here.

I've always liked Canada, but I love England, especially where I live in the north east.
Canada is soul crushingly boring unless you live in one of the 3 hub cities

Bollocks.
Rural England is the shit. Nearest on-duty police officer after 6pm - 60 miles away. Nearest hill to tear up on a mountain board - 3/4 mile away. Empty roads, no CCTV, no deadly critters and all the grow space you could ask for. Absolute best place to grow up in the world :D.

Hey I'm like you I love living in the country don't get me wrong, but that guy sounded like the sort of person that judges places by their size.
The country is the best, you can shoot, hunt, trip balls on acid acting crazy with no one calling the cops on you, set things on fire, and the list goes on.

Well the cities are full of cracked-up minorities carrying blades, at least if some chavs bother you can just punch their ringleader and they'll fuck off, that would get you stabbed in London.

But, the knife culture problem is moving further north every day.
Here in Durham I hadn't seen anyone using a knife as a weapon until it was all over the news about the kids down south, then I seen it 3 times in a week

The effects of spiralling national debt, a swollen welfare scheme and a failing NHS are not limited to the "shitty imporverished" areas.

I've never had any problems with the NHS, when Labour are gone welfare will get sorted out, and national debt boosts the economy.
Yes, there may be slight problems, but fuck it. Are you telling me you would have preferred to live in any other point in history? Fancy living in the Victorian times when you are gonna get smallpox or something? Fancy some bubonic plague? Or maybe you would like to be a caveman and be focused the whole time on simply surviving the day?
Spending beyond our means is a good thing. Do you really think that conservative spending would lead us to the level of technology that we enjoy today? Ok, so sooner or later our debts will catch up on us, we might have a few recessions and shit, but our quality of living will still be massively higher than had we never had the debt.

Actually, I was being a bit of an arse with the NHS point, becuase I've never had an issue with it either.
I'm definitely not saying I'd rather live in another time, just another part of the world. Somewhere that has the balance between quality of life, availability of luxuries and somewhere that isn't an infuriating nanny state. If you refer to my above posts you'll find that I've also said I enjoyed living in rural England, becuase the cancer of the nanny state has not yet spread there, but with some of Labour's proposed ideas it could well do so:
http://www.bigmother.dk/pictures/BanksyCCTV.jpg - not so far from the truth
As I also said earlier, we NEED to get Labour out in order to patch up some of the holes in our ship, which is currently taking on an alarming ammount of water.

The NHS isn't aweful but it's not good by any means. There's a reason I have private health insurance.
I had an infection which made my gums swell up. I thought id leave it a day and see how I felt. The next day my gums were bleeding badly. I called the GP and was told that there were no appointments available for the day. I went to A+E and was told because it didnt start within 24 hours they couldn't see me. I was worried that my teeth were about to drop out.
If I have a health problem I want it seen to whatever the time of day.
To whoever said that debt is a good thing... wait till we have to repay our debts. The baby boomers are about to retire. That will mean that the number of people contributing is a lot less than taking.
If you're in the UK I strongly advise you to watch Silly Money on 4OD. It's 4 hours of shocking viewing.

I just have a somewhat dumb question, which is this: why can't the government simply refuse to pay its debts? I mean, what's the worst that could happen? Usually governments borrow from foreign governments, right? So why can't they simply say to it debtors "look i aint paying you back what you loaned me, now get fucked"?

I had a similar thought. My understanding is that if you simply fail to repay your debts in international politics then your currency becomes pretty much worthless, essentially nobody wants to have your currency because nobody trusts it, then you can't buy anything because you have no buying power and the currency devalues in comparisson to another one. A good example of this is Zimbabwe where people will do anything for a US dollar because in their eyes it's a reliable currency. Essentially the economy collapses if the debts arn't paid back. Lets not forget that the people who we owe the money to are also the ones that make everything. It's not like we owe billions of pounds to a small island that nobody has ever heard of. The people giving us cash are countries like China.
I may be completely wrong.
