I don't see the negatives involved in socialized health care. People complain that it will raise taxes, but the amount of money you will spend going to the hospital during your life will vastly outweigh the amount you will have to spend on increased taxes.

So why are Americans so opposed to this system it doesn't seem to make any sense as it would save everyone money? Plus providing a major convenience for all Americans.

(Directed towards average American against universal health care not politicians or those involved with health insurance companies)

[If you were the President of the United States for the next year, what would you do about the war. How would you handle your power and why?]

I would pull our military out, half would be ordered to Kuwait. Quick response to Iraq if needed. the other half would go to Afghanistan with the objective being the Taliban and terrorist training camps. The ultimate goal is finding OBL.

Our intelligence gathering personnel would be given more funding and equipment, they would be the "front line" of the war on terror.

I would also try to mend fences with our allies. We need them.

anyone else?[

John Kerry is apparently trying to re-write world history. He was on TV today, and was asked about the bloodbath after America pulled out of Vietnam. He responded by saying that even though many people claimed there would be a bloodbath if we pulled out of Vietnam, there never was. And referred to the re-education camps as "not being pretty". Going on to say that he has spoken to many people who went through the re-education camps, and they are "thriving in Vietnam" now!

This guy is quite possibly the most ignorant, and or just plain delusional person in politics these days! Unbelievable to think how close this man came to being president.

Can we please stop this charade that the war in Iraq or the war on terror are being even remotely effective? I mean, no one can rationally come to the conclusion that being in Iraq or staying in Iraq will do anything to make America safer. I couldn't even imagine how much safer we would be if the money and time spent on Iraq and the war on terror were instead used on securing our borders, shoring up our immigration and visa system, and improving domestic security.

Yeah the Democrats are basically retards that have yet to put forward a unified alternative, but that doesn't by default make the Republican/White House stance right or better, it just happens to be easier to keep what we currently have instead of making hard decisions.

Anyways, does anyone still believe in the war on terror? If so, why? I don't see how any Republican or conservative can support any of our actions so far, considering how expensive and shortsighted they are.

I realized today that I've never given welfare much thought. I usually just say that it shouldn't exist, but I think I was pretty ignorant.

Now I'm trying to figure out what I think about it. I know people here who don't abuse welfare but from what I see the majority of people on welfare here DO use it irresponsibly (buying expensive cars instead of paying bills or buying food).

How does welfare work? Do tax-payers pay for it?

While I try to research this, what do you guys think? Should it be more strict so I don't have to buy some guy's crack, and it can go to someone's baby food instead?

Should it be abolished because it doesn't help them, it just lets people ween off the gov't for half their lives?

edit: should this be in Oh The Humanities?

Essentially this guys says what I am unable to express clearly in words. He is saying that the government of United States are in the process of setting up staged operations to scare the American people into accepting the upcoming war with Iran, and the police state.

I guess it's possible that some might consider this line of thinking a tad tinfoil hat, however personally I think what he said is quite possible, given how Bush-Cheney administration had lied the public into an unjust war.

The author also seems to have an instinctive distrust of the media, which I totally agree with.

Let's hear what you have to say.

Good news! More and more men and women from all walks of life have chosen to enlist in the Canadian Armed Forces with the intent of fighting in Afghanistan. Everyone from 17 year olds to a 54 year old woman have enlisted in a recent recruiting drive. Overall, recruitment is up 40% with 3,400new troops entering the military from April.

Dr. Hubert of the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary gave this explanation for the dramatic rise in enlistment in Canada: “We're at war. But we're on the side of the angels. We are stopping the Taliban from its murderous intent against its own population, so that's human security. And we are in this war to ensure that al-Qaeda is not given a breathing space, so it's Canadian national security. What can be more stirring to a Canadian youth than to know you are participating in that?”

To all our new soldiers !

Check out this link here and feel proud of the new Canadian soldiers. ../../www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...ageRequested=1

To those of you who didn't know this, please make sure you're sitting down, as the following may come as a shock to you:
The people do not directly elect the president of the United States. The president is elected via the Electoral College, in which state electors decide which president to elect, taking into consideration the political leanings of the majoirty of the people in each state. They have "all or nothing" policies which account for red or blue states, which means that entire states are cast in favor of specific candidates in accordance with a majority of the population (i.e. 51% of the people voting one way).

I for one, think this practice should be abolished and the president should be elected via direct popular vote, especially in this new age of corruption.

I'm tired of having my vote cancelled out by someone else simply because 51% of the state population thinks differently. This is a particularly significant problem in heavily populated states, like my native California, because current electoral law says that if 6 million people vote one way, the remaining 5 million votes are discounted. That's not democracy. That's not even a republic, that's just tyranny by (a practically nonexistant) majority. I shouldn't have to move to Arkansas just so I can have my vote count.

How does everyone else feel about this? Should we switch to a popular vote?
