so what are some of the many examples of where english words are substituted for french?

ie.

'pleased to meet you - enchante'.

'that is soo.. jejune.

so basically french words alot of snobs use

I'm thinking of learning Greek out of interest. I've studied Japanese for about 4 years now and spanish for 2. I enjoy both, mostly due to thier simple grammer and phonetics (to me, being british anglophonic). Would Greek offer the same advantages? I have a feeling it may actuly be quite difficult (high school latin springing to mind) but in all honesty I have no idea.

Scenario:
I'm an engineering student, who has failed several courses and need to take a few more courses to make up for lost credits.

Options:

Take a course of pure memorizing cases of natural disasters with pop quizzes

-OR-

Take a German 100 course with one spot left with an old lady reported to very nice. I do not know about the difficulty.

Should I take German 100? I have given learning German by myself an attempt in the past and stopped, not because it got too hard but I was lazy. I dont know how I'll find the learning German since my previous attempt was small.
I do find learning a language in a classroom setting greatly ineffective compared to learning a language myself.
Does anyone who has taken German as a second language have any comments?

Do you think time has come to stop using Profanity in the language we speak. and will you teach profane words to someone who wants to learn your language?

So I looked up the definition of "pun" first: ../../www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pun, and I quote:

"the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound"

Then I looked up "double entendre": ../../www.merriam-webster.com/dicti...le%20entendre_3A

"1 : ambiguity of meaning arising from language that lends itself to more than one interpretation 2 : a word or expression capable of two interpretations with one usually risqué "

As you can see, these two are somewhat similar, especially if you take the 2nd meaning for double entendre, in which case it's almost identical to pun...this is quite confusing.

My question is, how exactly are these two different? Can someone give me like a real life example please? Actually I kind of have one right here: showthread.php@t=2185987, post #1, where the author said "what a shitty experience". Is that a pun or a double entendre?

What are your thoughts, experiences etc with these two things?

Hi? Bilingual, or even trilingual whatever, the point is you speak more than one language fluently/natively.

Do you find yourself switch back and forth between thinking in the two different languages?

Do you find that there are certain things you can't think in one language and you have to think in the other one?

Also, what are your thoughts on how these two languages compare to each other? I am assuming that one of them is English.

For me, I find that English is a very precise language, compared to my mother tongue. If I want to debate in a (somewhat) formal manner, I can only do so in English, whereas I cannot in my native tongue. However, I can compose (bad!) poetry in my native tongue though, because it is a language that lends itself to easy artistic expression precisely due to its imprecise nature.

Your thoughts?

Why is it considered 'correct' English to say 'My friend and I' and not 'Me and my friend?' They are exactly the same. My guess is that it would be it stemming from an outdated politeness custom whereby the speaker puts their subject before themselves. Any thoughts?

Does anyone know of anything like Pimslar's audio tapes but specifically for vocabulary in Japanese? I find the tapes extremely useful but the vocabulary is weak...

So, I recently acquired, without paying a cent, the Pimsleur courses in just about every language imaginable.

I don't know if anyone's familiar with these things, but they're basically audio lessons in various foreign languages. I'm not sure what to make of them. Supposedly they're much better than those Rosetta Stone programs, but I don't know enough about either to make that kind of judgement.

I've always been good at doing things by ear, on account of growing up bilingual and being a musician and whatnot, so I seem to be doing alright at getting the accents down.

I'm trying out the Russian one "for the lulz". I can ask people if they understand English, but that's it so far. Seems like a useless skill to have, being as I might as well ask the question in English anyway.

I wonder if anyone cares to offer their thoughts and experiences regarding the efficacy of these programs? I don't imagine that I'll get particularly good at reading. They've got one little worksheet PDF for Russian, but I haven't looked at it yet. It doesn't appear to be very substantial, so I guess it's more of a speaking intensive course.

Am I wasting my time, TOTSE? I'll keep you posted on my experiences, if anyone is considering this course. I hope its worthwhile, but you get what you pay for, right?
