New Era of Retro

Games People Play is where to discuss personal computer, video game console, and arcade hardware and software - be it RPG, Sim, Strategy, Fighting, Action/Platform, or any other category. Although discussion of modern platforms/software will most likely dominate, discussion of classic videogame/computer hardware and software is always enjoyable, and certainly welcome - ESPECIALLY since there are public domain/shareware emulators of nearly every older computer/console available these days. Here's a taste of what awaits you: Nintendo-vs-Sega-vs-Sony, Console-vs-PC-vs-Mac, Hardware spec sheets/information, Industry news and discussion, Software reviews, IRC conference announcements/Reports, Emulators, Emulators, Emulators! ... and much, much more!

New Era of Retro

Post by Enigma » Sat Jul 06, 2019 8:03 pm

So we can all agree that everything from the Magnavox Oddessy to the Dreamcast is retro, right? Spurglords are consistent that OG Xbox, Gamecube, Wii, et cetera are NOT retro though, but in the case of the Xbox and Gamecube those were released nearly 20 years ago. What do we consider this new era?

I consider anything from ps1, saturn, dreamcast and before retro. Everything else is just kids thinking it's retro because it's what they played when they were younger.

Yeah, but PS2 came out 19 years ago. The demographic it was marketed towards is now in their mid 30s

I think the definition will slowly shift as more of the people who were active in the retro scene over the last handful of years start fading out too, and other folks pick up the torch from that point. Who know, maybe PC systems in broad terms are gonna become full on retro over the next couple years.

Hopefully the term will change to allow more consoles to be considered retro. I would personally consider the 1st and 2nd generation vintage at this point.

I'd hope so too, it only makes sense to do so. But it's much like the punk scene, where people newer to the scene are called posers despite anything that they do. Best thing to do is just to consider it a part of it, and not care about old-people who yell at you for not playing 'real retro-games', those people will most likely be gone in the next handful of years anyhow, so.

Oh, I mean, yeah, I'm just going to play the games. I'm still not over the 90s so to me any term applied is for hipsters anyway.
