There is bound to be a new generation of users, and it's important for us to be able to teach them, or at least not scare them off by being gaylords. I'm kinda lit so I don't remember what my point was :o

Totse was originally about the freedom to pass along information, hence the tens of thousands of text files. It eventually became a place where there were thousands of users active any given time of the day, with nearly 30 unique sections that were constantly active, meaning any question you had on any topic under the sun could be discussed in depth. The real pull was the ACTIVE discussion on any topic, and the fact that no matter what you said you weren't going to get banned for being racist or saying something someone didn't like. Now, what people don't think about though, is that there were also 240ish moderators spread out across these 30 sections ensuring every topic was in the right place. All Jeff did was keep the site going. He left how each section was ran up to the team of moderators in charge.

Sounds like this Jeff Hunter fella did a great job. Why did it get closed down?

Jeff Hunter started Totse as a dial-up BBS back in about 1987, and shut it down in 2009. I've always just assumed he was probably in his mid 20s when he started Totse, given the fact he had the resources for multiple phone lines et cetera, which means he easily could have been in his late 40s or even 50s when Totse finally went down. He was, quite literally, an old man who more than likely didn't understand modern tech well enough to effectively keep the place going. He just didn't want to run it anymore, and Zok didn't want to take over Totse, he just wanted to take over the members.

The only thing that really sucks is that Zoklet didn't go down in a cleaner way. Totse went down in such a way that everyone who remembered it was able to get redirected to Zoklet, but Zok let hte redirect go down in less than a month.

There's a small chance it can still get turned around, and we can regain a thriving user base, but the few of us there are left need to start getting along.
