Cinderella is the daughter of a rich nobleman who married a woman with two daughters about her age. The nobleman became ill and eventually died, leaving Cinderella the heir to his fortune, but she's too young to really do anything with it, so the stepmother takes control and basically blows through all of it, making Cinderalla a personal slave. The house falls into disrepair, et cetera, but the king decides to throw a ball so his son, the prince, can find a wife, inviting every girl in the land. If you don't know the story it's not really worth explaining to be honest.
