Late night walk from home yields positive results

Post by Das Troll » Tue Aug 10, 2021 11:41 pm

Living in a large city produces unique foraging opportunities if you know what you're looking for. Tonight I was walking home from work through a park close to where I live, making sure not to aggro the homeless that sometime sleep under the bridges, and I just so happen to look up into a tree that had a street lamp behind it. What do I find? Paw paw fruit. Poor mans banana, Indiana banana ect ect. I've been keeping an eye out for these things for a while now and never found one until tonight.

Sort of an ugly fruit that starts early to mid August and is ripe early to mid September. I've only ever had it in beer form (delicious) but I hear it tastes like a mango/banana. Not only is their ripe time super short, they only last a few days on a shelf as well. The seeds are also edible. I'm hoping I can rob the tree blind one night without someone calling the cops on me or having to fight off some homeless person. My idea is to make wine out of it since I don't have the stuff to make beer.

Wow, that's really cool! I'm kind of jelly because all we have around here are boring old blackberries.

Just found a bunch of elderberry mixed in with pokeberry. I didn't even notice until I looked close. This park is producing a lot of edibles.

You must have real parks in your area. Two of our biggest in my home town are converted dumps.

It looks to be a ravine of some type. I think they just put a road down the center and left all the trees in because there are some old hardwoods there.

Apparently I need to pay more attention because I also found wild peaches and bilberries. My knowledge grows!

I get the feeling that we walk past a grocery store worth of food every day without knowing it.

Not around here.

Sure, there's probably a lot of stuff out there I don't see, but I wasn't kidding when I said our two biggest parks are old dumps. One was a medical waste dump, and one was a regular dump.

Our area wasn't known for being good foraging land though, it was a good shipping hub.

Just picked those bilberries. I didn't even get all of them either. I'll probably leave a fair amount on the bush so I don't decimate the plants ability to reproduce.

I have to go shake the shit out of the next tree to get the high ones to fall and hope i dont get cracked in the head. They look small, but some of them are pretty hefty.
