The Stand (Stephen King) ~Extended Edition~

Post by Enigma » Thu Jun 16, 2022 9:54 pm

Started reading 'The Stand' on my new-to-me Nook tablet, and apparently the edition I have is some "extended edition" or kind of a director's cut of the book. I'm not very far into it yet, I guess, but I've read most of it before so while I kind of know where it goes at some point, it's still all pretty fresh to me. They haven't really brought all the different characters together yet in a meaningful way other than the virus and kind of going into detail how rapidly it spreads, but I'm to the point where you can kind of tell they're wrapping that up and have made it clear the mentioned people are mostly the .6% that is immune.

To my understanding the mini-series based on the book is pretty good, and I'll maybe check that out and make a thread in the movie section.

I remember renting the VHS tapes of that. It was like 7 cassettes long.

Oh I can believe it, 'The Stand' is one of King's longest books, and the 'Uncut & Extended Edition" is almost 400 pages longer

About 20% of the way through now and it's JUST starting to kill people off and introduce the main antagonist, but you can tell it's going to be a while before it starts linking the people up.

So far they have Nick Andros's story pretty much kicking along in full swing, and Frannie Goldsmith has or is about to experience her first touch of death, and Stu has been transitioned to more of an annoyance to Project Blue than anything.

Roughly 30% of the way through (it's a pretty long book) and, honestly, I don't even think anyone has left their starting location yet with the obvious exception of Stu Redman because they moved him (and all of Arnette) earlier on.

A few of the characters introduced earlier on are dead. Tools used to amplify the seriousness of the super-flu.

My one and only comment, having read through like 80% of this book before, is that I don't remember so much "padding" before the main event.

I did figure out why Randall Flagg stood out to me, I guess King uses him in a lot of his books.

He's Walter from the Dark Tower series.

I guess he went by a few names in Dark Tower.

Yep. The plague in The Stand was caused by the breaking of one of the chains to the tower if I remember correctly.

The same thing happened in the movie/book The Mist. They even show Roland and the Tower in the movie.

I guess it's true and all the King Books are tied together, some just aren't as noticeable (like Dreamcatcher)

About 2/3 of the way through now and King did something weird by spending the first 3rd of the book introducing like 4 people then throwing 30 more in near the end. The first group has already met up with Mother Abigail, and the 2nd group isn't far behind, while the 3rd group dropped a huge plot twist (you'll have to read it to find out ;) ), and Flagg's group is showing how things work in Vegas.

I think listened to this book a long time ago when I had a job that pretty much left me alone all day. I chewed through so many books during that time.

I feel like I would miss a ton of the book doing that

Na it was a job where I was on autopilot the whole time. I could have done that job in my sleep.

Sounds nice. My job is great but I wouldn't mind clocking in, blanking out for like 12 hours, then clocking out

Finally finished The Stand, and in classic Stephen King fashion the ending was rushed and felt lackluster. SPOILER: Trashy comes back with a nuke and Flagg unwittingly sets it off, Vegas is destroyed, it's heavily implied Flagg wasn't, Frannie has her baby and it doesn't die, Stu survives with the help of Kojak and Tom Cullen, then Stu, Frannie, and baby Patrick go back to Maine.

I honestly would absolutely love a sequel

Considering Flagg was Walter from the Dark Tower series, it's certain.

"Flagg" was, but the entity Flagg was wasn't if that makes sense.
