We almost had a high speed rail network in 2010

Post by Kheron » Tue May 05, 2020 1:39 pm

WI Gov Scott Walker decided to be a little bitch and reject it. It wouldn't have even come from WI Taxpayers, it was hundreds of millions in Federal money ffs. Ohio also rejected their part, and then the money was going to go to Florida after those two fuckwads decided we didn't need to invest in our god damn infrastructure and make (albeit, temporary) jobs, and Florida started spending their award money ahead of time and then ALSO fucking rejected it.

So it instead got repurposed to construction in California. No highspeed rails, which would help travel in this giant ass country immensely, and which most other major nations have already constructed.

Get with the times, America. Holy shit.

And with how the economy has been the last 15, 20 years? I grew up being told by everyone that WW2 helped get us out of the Great Depression by all the factory jobs. Maybe it's time we update our laughably ancient infrastructure and help put money back into the economy with all that work? Hmm? No? Better to just let the working class suffer and to let the rest of the world advance and leave us in the dust? Okay.

Okay. Fuck you.

Cincinnati Ohio has their own subway system that they paid for, finished, then shut down and never used. A brand new system just went and rotted because politics. I always thought high speed rail would be great for big cities and big universities. Big state university could literally pass out their graduates through the rail system to adjacent cities or states with a high speed rail.

It's funny you mention this because we were just talking about this at work. We could have had a rail-car system back in 1910 if the automotive industry didn't lobby against it, and electric cars.

Scott Walker is a fucking moron too. Eastern Wisconsin could have really used that light rail. There's literally no public transportation from Green Bay all the way down to Milwaukee. There's barely a bus, Phil and I had to wait forever in Fon Du Lac for the bus, then wait like two hours in Milwaukee for the actual bus that didn't even go to Red Wing, we had to go all the way to fucking Burnsville and find a ride back home.

Shit, high speed rail would open up the country to cheaper travel. Even if flying is still quicker, it's also more expensive than trains. Being able to reach the coasts, or major metro areas like Chicago (where all the current rails & proposed high speed rails would intersect) would be a major boon for personal & supplies/goods transportation.

And fuck the lack of bus systems! Apparently the Twin Cities has one of the best public transit systems in America and it's still so ass. Buses show up super early and don't wait till the time they're MEANT to be there, or show up super late, or this one intersection I tried to find my bus at that had like 12 different stops and only a few were labeled and they all had the same like 2 route numbers and none of them even said if they were North/South or East/West bound or whatever the fuck they were.

At least the light rails are mostly consistent and somewhat quick (compared to buses). And the A line bus tries to come every 10 minutes like the light rail, and have swankier buses. But the rest of the metro system is trash as fuck.

Busses are a shit tier way to get around imo. Subways and L trains are the way to go.
