There are many "grey man" techniques, grey man being someone who is amongst the crowd but easily unnoticed and forgotten. Why be a grey man? Well there are plenty of reason why you would want to go amongst crowds and not be noticed, ,specifically in times of civil unrest. In my younger years I worked as a janitor and basically got on the job training as a grey man. Here are a few grey man tips.
1. Wear the uniform and speak the lingo
This is a tip from the Kevin Mitnik area of Social Engineering where you were "hacking" a target with words and social interaction. Many people won't even ask if you what you are doing if you have a clip board and a uniform. Last I checked (admittedly it's been a while) you could buy a FeDex uniform online that someone sold because they quit. The second step is to know as much as the inside lingo as possible. "Deliver x pages to dock A on the flip side of building D" is a great way to confuse people into compliance.
2. Don't talk much
As a grey man, you have to be there but easily be forgotten. Ask topical questions like "how was your day?" or " Those damn X team" ect ect. Your questions must be answered and dismissed just as quickly.
3. Bland cloths
As a grey man you must must be forgettable and thus wear bland cloths. If shit goes down you must be considered a phantom or memory ghost. "There was a guy there with a grey hoodie. I don't remember anything else" ect. Standing out is bad.
These are just a few things that I can recall at the moment.
