  • The dangers of subscription services

In my wonderings through the hallways of my job, I began thinking of how many things are trying to go into a subscription service style of payment. You can see it where ever you look. Streaming services that used to be an "all in one" solution to cable began to split up and become their own services and now it's just as bad if not worse than cable. Cell phones have always been a subscription service, now with even more shit tacked onto it. Hell, even BMW tried to make their heated seats into a subscription service until people lost their fucking minds over it. The more and more subscription services that come out, the more and more it seems that everyone is trying some sort of version of it.

Remember when you used to be able to buy a game and that game came out as it is? No room for DLC or bug fixes. Everything seems so fluid now that game devs will sell you a game that isn't even finished as a pre order, only to shit the game out onto your screen half finished and beg for you to wait a few months for them to patch up all the nonsense. Companies have realized that this payment model is a cash cow as credit card companies have been raking in the cash doing the same thing for years.

So where's the danger? Expanding on the paragraph above, it reminds me of Deus Ex Human Evolution where you could get all cybered up, but you had to buy drugs to keep your body from rejecting the implants. Then when I thought that, I realized that's what is being done with the trans community. In fact, doctors have been caught on video saying how much money can be made from putting these people on a subscription service for drugs for the rest of their lives. Once other companies start to lean into this, you won't really own anything anymore as it can be taken away in a heart beat. Not even Steam games are yours technically. You are just long term renting them. Try and uninstall Steam and see how many of those games you can play without having to do some fuckery.

Imagine if you will a world where you don't even have a choice to own your car, your home, or even simple things like a couch or bed. Pay the license slave or we are going to take away your bug ridden blanket. Shun these things I say, go back to physical media with books, games, and movies as they can't take and edit them without your approval. Beware the subscription service payment model.
