1. Love one another as I have loved you.

2. Love your neighbor as yourself.

I believe in Jesus Christ and that he said this. I despise most of the church, especially the Vatican, excepting certain qualities of priests, most Jesuits, and some Redempters.

1. Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

2. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

Do you believe that he said these things? Sounds like a real sweetheart.

I belived he said it. After all, he was human. We all have ups and downs.

Throwing people in a fire to burn there for an eternity is not a "down".

Jesus was beyond being human.

You forgot that one.

No he did not say those things, they "represent the perspective or content of a later or different tradition" - The Five Gospels, What Did Jesus Really Say? THE search for the authentic words of Jesus, New Translation and Commentary By Robert W. Funk, Roy W. Hoover, And THE JESUS SEMINAR

Martini you seem to have taken both these verses out of context to support your own preconceived, apparently biased, point of view("Sounds like a real sweetheart"). Take your first verse from Matthew 10:34 as an example, here is the context:

"34"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to turn

" 'a man against his father,

a daughter against her mother,

a daughter-in-law against her motherinlaw—

36a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'"

The context is clearly regarding family conflict, here's what the scholars say:

"Peace or a sword. The saying about family feuds is based on a passage in the prophet Micah(7:5-6), which reads: You see a son dishonours his father, a daughter stands up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A person's enemies are all members of the same household.

The claim that Jesus deliberately creates conflict would seem to contradict other sayings of Jesus in which he recommends unqualified love(for example, Matt.5:43-48*). In this saying Jesus refers to himself in the first person, something the Fellows doubt that he did. For that reason, and because the saying is based on something the propet Micah said, the Fellows concluded that these sentences were formulated by the Christian community.

quote:*Matt. 5: 43"You have heard that the law of Moses says, `Love your neighbor' and hate your enemy. 44But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and on the unjust, too. 46If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Those verses are justs lessons about following the 1st commandment I posted.

God loved us with complete self-sacrificing love, and gave us his son. You should live only to make the world better, however you do it, you must devote yourself to it, and you will find the way.

No. You should live only to glorify God. It doesn't matter what happens on this world; it is sinful, and corrupt, and will be destroyed when Judgement comes.

Yeah, forget debating. Let's all just sit in a circle and tell each other how neat our beliefs are, no matter how stupid or illogical!

Hmm, if he didn't say those things, why are you saying I took it out of context, and then repeating the almost exact words as written in Mathew? Something can't be taken out of context if it was never actually said, could it?

Bullshit! It's not talking about families that already have conflict. Jesus says, "I have come to turn

a man against his father,

a daughter against her mother,

a daughter-in-law against her motherinlaw— "

So? I can list tons of contradictions in the Bible. Would you like me to list some of my favorites?

Absolutely! I find faith to be one of the most dangerous things for individuals and society as a whole.

You asked me this once before and I answered you. Why are you asking me again; do you think my answer has changed?

I do contribute positively! I have posted plenty about the positive aspects of embracing science and rational thought and abandoning superstitious and magical beliefs. I personally think that this is one of the most usefull and positive things I can contribute on a message board. Or to put it in words that you might better understand, I came not to send peace, but a sword (just don't take that last part out of context).

To me, the two best Jesus quotes are:

"The kingdom of God is within you" and

"All these things I have done, you shall do also--all these and more."

The two are one and the same. If we follow Jesus' commandments then the glorification of God and the bettering of the world are inevitable.
