I voted BSD. Not so much for a technical reason as more just personal choice.
I get on with most Linux's too, except maybe Ubuntu which always manages to hit the wrong cord with me...

and out of the BSD's I would go for FreeBSD and NetBSD, again for the little things. NetBSD can be a pain to set up, but its always ends up with exactly what I want on it, and nothing else.

Those are just my personal opinions and experiences. I'm sure many would both agree and disagree. I expect growing up among a house of bsd servers might have something to do with it

Well, having only toyed with Solaris and Linux, I'd be votin' for my staunch favourite OS X. Best consumer-level OS on the market, far and away. Pity the bundled apps are such junk.

When it comes to Linux, Gentoo is my distro of choice. I must say, I can't stand the hokey African bullshit that Ubuntu is centered around. I've called it a gimmick since day one and I stick to my guns.

Oh yes, the theme is so crucial to the OS that you certainly can't change it. Ignore the fact the lead dev is from South Africa, while you're at it.

Gentoo's good though. We should have a 'post your CFLAGS' thread.
