I believe that the availability of intellectual property online in the form of torrents, P2P, etc, is symbolic of a larger movement.

Society is slowly but surely rejecting the idea of "owning" information.

Information rushes to us at the speed of light, enabling us to communicate with anyone, anywhere, anytime. The idea of restricting that is just revolting.

I see students downloading books for study, whether it be for English or Social Studies classes. They don't care that these primary sources are "owned" by someone. They classify the material as knowledge that cannot be owned.

The younger generation also expects its culture to be free and unrestricted. Films, computer programs, music, and books are all available to them at no cost.

Intellectual property is on its way out.

Honestly, I just think they want free shit. THEY make a film or music and they will want to make money off it and protect it from being freely distributed. Give a man a chance to get something for free, without fear of punishment, and he will take it.

Many (like Weird Al) don't care. Alex Jones WANTS people to copy his videos and documentaries and hosts them on google vids. Many smaller artists get their stuff started with P2P. Also, Animes got spread via fansubbing before the production companies see that a viable dub is possible.

I think that the most curious thing about ´intellectual property´ is that by making a copy and increasing its availability, a person is accused of theft.

Especially since the original intent of copyrights and patents was to give a limited time of exclusive rights to the creator of something useful after which it passed into the public domain.

Now, with the virtually unlimited periods of time which have been granted by lawmakers, intellectual property has been converted into a commodity which can be traded. It has, in effect, been stolen from the public domain and put in the pockets of those who can afford to buy it.
