Default Suicide

This thread isin't about suicide in the sense of escape, but in the sense of taking control of your own end.

Have you ever mulled over the idea of choosing the exact time, place and the way you die? Death is unavoidable, so you might as well do it on your own terms. It is a big social taboo (at least where I live) even if someone ends their life because of a terminal disease, old age or any other crippling conditions. But I dont really see where all the negative connotations come from. There is a big difference between a brash "life sucks here goes" type of ordeal, and a well thought out exit.

Why is it such a taboo subject to the point that it is illegal in the US? When I am old and my body is broken I dont want to waste away in a bed unable to fuck, run or feed myself. Quality over quantity I say. I mean, socially it is really a good thing. Imagine how much money would be saved if half of the people who spend thousands to lay in a bed with their vital functions ran by machines would just take the leap. God forbid you were in bad enough condition to not be capable of doing it. That would be the most helpless hopeless situation that comes to mind.

What are your guys thoughts on this? Maybe I'm just thinking too far ahead in my life, but I get a real sense of freedom knowing I decide when I am done living.

Hmm. Interesting train of thoughts. I've never mulled over the exact details, but I have thought about it on several occasions.

Sometimes when I am driving I feel as though I am in control of my death. That any minute I could drive into an oncoming car or off a cliff or anything I want. I suppose those thoughts come as a result of being in a bad car crash as a result of stupidity.

I've never felt the need to be in control of it all though, because essentially you don't have the choice. Even if you feel the need to control the way you die, and if you do control it, that's how you were going to die anyway.

From a young person's perspective, I feel like being old might be the worst thing that could happen to a person. I am very afraid of losing the abilities that come with youth. I feel like being healthy is really important as I like to act upon impulse. I never want to look in the mirror and see wrinkles on my face. I never want people to have to look after me like I am a child again. It's a humiliating thought.

But, as I witness my father getting older, I feel like he can see something that I can't. The heart will always be young, and simple things that require physical capability like sex and feeding yourself aren't viewed the same way. I think a new portal to the way of viewing life presents itself with age. Besides, I've heard of 80 year olds having sex, and that's a long time to live.

Thumbs up Re: Suicide

I've always believed people who commit suicide no longer view any place on earth as 'home' anymore. So they try to find a new 'home' where ever suicide takes them. And yes, suicide is such a serious topic but so minimal when you compare it to our earth. 100 billion humans have already died, so you offing yourself is so small in the grand scheme of things. If you find yourself much happier knowing the date you set yourself to die then so be it. However I highly doubt when that day comes you will actually kill yourself.

that isn't why it is illegal. it is because your using the community's resources. (police recover your body, waste their time, mortician has to do an autopsy, etc.)

your using tax payers' money for stupid shit like killing yourself.

Abhorrent capitalist view-point.

Yes, but I think I'd rather the surprise that comes with an unplanned death. That being said, I don't see why anyone else shouldn't be allowed to commit suicide, if they can be judged as sane and rational before the fact.
