Default Media Players

I'm running Ubuntu Hardy and I'm just wandering what media player people prefer. I've always run winamp on my Windows machines. Is there anything better available in linux? suggestions?

Well, I guess you can try any of these for Video.

or these for Audio.

For Video I use to use mplayer, but I think the default that comes with ubuntu is totem, which I think is a frontend based up xine/gstreamer,

I now use VLC, remember VLC on windows?..it was pretty good, it plays everything and anything.

For audio I use to use xmms, which was pretty damn good, I would say. I don't have it currently installed as haven't really got around to it.

As far as customization and features goes, I'm not sure which is the "best", as i really haven't put much thought to it, because I don't really watch Videos or listen to Audio on my computer.

Thanks, I've installed VLC and I quite like it for Video! I'm now trying out Amarok. It looks pretty good from the front end so far. we'll see!

Amarok is great for Music libraries. As for video, I would recommend either VLC or Mplayer.

If you want good DVD playback, get Ogle, as VLC and Mplayer both give me menu issues.

I just use Totem (the Ubuntu default) for watching movies, and Rhythmbox (also the Ubuntu default) for music. They just do everything I need, and they interact with my remote quite nicely.

I use VLC mostly for transcoding and streaming. It's a great utility that way. I'll also use mplayer on occasion in scripts.

I'm liking mplayer.
Vlc is pretty good, too.
I started with VLC but moved toward Xine, xmms, and mplayer.

VLC in Ubuntu pissed me off because a person had to build from source in order to get a VLC version that downloaded radio streams. That just pissed me off after a while, because I kept having a hell of a time getting a VLC version to compile from source. There were dependencies left and right; I decided to say fuck it and find an alternative.

Amarok.

That is one of the big reasons i kept using linux after i installed it. It is just awesome and does everything you want and nothing you don't want.

It's KDE, and some people get a bit anal about mixing gnome and KDE, but they are wrong.

Heres a picture of it, but there are millions of skins out there:
