Default Multiculturalism vs. Nationalism vs. "The Global Community"

How do you feel that globalization has affected world culture? With the spread of distinctly western technologies like the television, internet, and increasing urbanization in many developing countries, do you believe that the world is now multicultural, or are we now a global community that is blind to culture? Perhaps you would like to see the world become much more nationalist and ethno-centric? Responses please.

it has made it AWESOME. Have you seen those books in the "photography" sections of bookstore on the various cultures in urban areas through the world? Graffiti in Brazil, people jury-rigging bikes in NYC the ganguro in Japan, hot-roders in Iraq, etc. And they all adopt parts of the native culture, slang, ideas, etc.

somewhat. Well there are different internets, the russian internet, the chinese internet, etc. Well not internet but people who are russian and stay on russian sites, etc. In china's case it's forced more-ish. Many people still go between sites and whatnot.

I swore in multiculturalism there would be some weird 'unity' but eh..

Quote:
The term multiculturalism generally refers to an applied ideology of racial, cultural and ethnic diversity within the demographics of a specified place, usually at the scale of an organization such as a school, business, neighbourhood, city or nation.

yes the world is more multicultural.

getting to that, expecially in the younger generation. Older generation would be more biased. It also depends on region and all. there is still heavy nationalism and could get worse, see the below link

fuck no. I can understand and like black nationalism, but I also support multiculturalism. Especially given that nationalism/ethnocentrism would probably be from WHITE PEOPLE who would be.....well look at Patrick Buchanan's statements, I don't want his moral/religious BS forced on me.

also hmm. nationalism might be increasing due to resistance. so yeah there is less of a bias but there are still biases

you can see this type of thing on internet forums of a good size. when a war or whatnot breaks out people from the nations or with ties, etc bitch at each other over centuries-old issues, etc.

And stuff like hackers fighting their nations in wars. happened during the Yugoslav wars and happened during the Russia-Ossetia-Georgia nigga moment.

good night

Coming from the UK, where nationalism (or patriotism) is nowhere near as prominent as in the US, I think it is outdated, a relic from the days of 19th century imperialism. Nationalism (and Patriotism) creates nothing but problems. As soon as the world as a whole accepts that we are all one race and demolishes the antiquated system of nation-states we currently have then humanity will be able to flourish.

Having said that, I think it's a shame when native cultures ("Indian" cultures - amazonian/mexican/native american etc. etc.) become lost.

Also, as things are going at the moment, it would be Western "culture" - with all the excess and spiritual bankruptcy that entails - that would be spread.

Multiculturalism is a pipe dream, as of now. Maybe in the future it can exist, but now it can only exist on a limited scale. There are still too many differences of development between different nations for cultures to be the same.

Developing nation = undeveloped nation = uncivilized nation = barbarian nation

Different terminology from different time periods, but they all mean the same thing. The world isn't as different from the 19th century as some believe.

Technology isn't western though no doubt a lot of people think of it that way. A silicon atom is a silicon atom. There are quite likely green aliens on the other side of the galaxy manufacturing microprocessors with silicon but it would be extremely RISCy to bet that they use an Intel instruction set.

Culture, nationalism and religion are just different forms of group think. More accurately forms of group non-think or group stupid. The nationalism just happens to be associated with a geographic territory.

A major problem has been the promotion of global consumerism. Everybody wans to imitate the American way of stupid, excuse me, way of life. But for the last 50 years the American economists haven't been telling the American people what they lose on the depreciation of the garbage. We have been buying our way into slavery. Have you ever heard an economist suggest mandatory accounting in the schools? How hard can it be with today's computers? But everybody on the planet needs a 3 GHz 8-core with a terabyte drive. Globalization won't work without it.

Take a Terror Bite out of the planet.

This is almost exactly what I was looking for. We see a lot of these cases in which when a nation decides to industrialize, they are flooded with American goods. Their local goods can't compete with Western giants, and so almost everyone in the worlds knows what a McDonalds is and every kid wants a pair of Levi Jeans. This works mainly on the younger generation. When something like the television is introduced to these cultures, they tend to report decreasing levels of respect for their elders and their own culture and instead decide to strive for an "American" way of life. Actually, the advertisements they're watching on TV have little do with REAL American culture. It's consumerism on a massive level, something that has CO-OPTED American culture and replaced apple pies and baseballs with mega-malls and Starbucks. This is what corporations think of when they use the collective term "global community." A world where no one HAS any real culture left, because all they do...is consume.

Peace comes only through unity. Unity comes only from uniformity. Only when everyone is the same, can peace be enforced. Thus only a single nationalistic entity can be unity. Cultures must be abandoned, religions forgotten, everyone should totally adhere to the State, thus the global community can only be Nationalism.

Or what if every different society decides to agree on peace as it's only method of interaction between other societies?

Your arrogance is excessive. Noone stands at the top of the pillar yet, so noone can ensure that a peace like that is enduring. It is temporal only, as soon as differences occur which only an authoritive State can decide upon, individuals will start to compete again.
