Trust thyself

What exactly does Emerson mean by this? A self-reliant person should trust who they are and what they do, not think that there is anything else that needs to be done or anyone else worth listening to... but interpreting it this way seems to go against what the essay is saying... so what exactly does he mean?

I thought it was know thyself, because if you know yourself, you can better understand others....

also if you know thyself first then you are more susceptible to trusting thyself
