Here is a list of some Search and Rescue (SAR) frequencies used all around the USA.
NOTES:
The US military uses VHF "low band" (25-50 MHz) for most of it's land Search and Rescue needs. The mode can be AM or FM (FM is usally used above 29.7 MHz, below that, AM or FM is used)
Most state/local government agencies use thier normal operating frequencies, and well as the nationally reconized VHF-low/VHF-high frequencies (47.460, 47.540, 155.160,and 155.205 MHz.)
Dont forget to include the normal police/fire/rescue/ channels in your scan bank during a Search and Rescue event. The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has a extensive VHF-FM repeater system all around the USA with output frequecnies on 148.125 and 148.150 MHz, is the CAP is involved in a SAR search, you will probably hear them on thier repeaters as well as on the other CAP frequencies. Most SAR missions will operate on only one or two frequency. Large events (i.e. missing aircraft searches) will sometimes have 5 or 10 active frequencies.----Sometimes the search and rescue event you are listening to is not a "real life" event! It may be a training mission. The CAP has many training missions, usally during the summer months, so train new members in how to use the Direction-Finding (DF) equipment operationg on 121.5 and/or 243.0 MHz. The CAP get around using the officall emergency channels by using the frequencies of 121.600 and 121.775 as a "real" emergancy locator transmitter (ELT). If you hear a "whoop-whoop" on these frequecnies, there is problaby a CAP training mission nearby. ON THE OTHER HAND.......if you hear a steady "whoop-whoop" on 121.5 or 243.0 MHz, THATS THE REAL THING!
Frequency is listed in MHz
25 to 406 MHz
