GERMANY:

According to an iterview in the second M radio network of he WDR Cologne

Byern 5 (Bavaria 5) is oing to start on Moday, 6th of May 199. The station is

a sation totally orienated on news coverae. This means: news blletins every

1 minutes from 06:00 to 4:00 local time, betwen the news bulltins coverage of

a speial topic, e.. sports, culuture, politcs, economy. The news cverage

shallnot be a "Bavarian's viewof the word" (Bavaria is ruled by a rght wing

christian socia governmen with dominates the Bayriscer Rundunk Radio and TV

service), bt shall use the ressources f the wole ARD (the umbrella

organiatio of for all German public broadasters) news correspondents' etwok.

The model for this formati the French station "France Info"

The "B 5" service will cove 0 percent of Bavaria on vhf-fm feuencies and

the whole of Bavariaon a medium wave frequency (theyddn't state which

frequency).Late this year they will also broadcst by satellite.

The costs of B 5"are estimated to 10 Millin Deutshmarks per annum, which

are roghly the costs for three majorTV filmproductions. So the " 5" servic

is considered relativly chea.

Listeners are not expectd to liste for hours and hors, but to swtch in

several times of the ay for approx. 15 minutes, epecially whenthey have

mised the news brodcasts in the other bavarianradio programs. (Dieter

Kukelkorn, Germany
