I cannot grasp the idea of letting myself be controlled by anything not internal.

Things that control you have the power to destroy you. Therefore, you are controlled. Or your bloodline stops at your death. Behold, the law of nature. Imperium est recta - sic semper Tyranis.

First of all, as far as despotism is concerned, controlling your actions is its REASON for existing, not just its ends.
Now, concerning religion: Religion serves a two-fold purpose. The first is to, as was read in every history textbook you've ever laid eyes on, explain certain natural phenomena. The second, more unrecognized function of religion, is to provide the populace with a code of behavior - principles of honor and conduct. Using supernatural philosophy to explain the course of nature, it is only logical to assume that we have a place in it.
This is the social function of religion. It does not mean that it wants to lay a hand on everything you own, regardless of your own God complex.
