What the hell does this dude do? The only time I hear about him is when the Holy Trinity is brought up. What kind of free loader is he?

In one sense "mediates the resurection life of Christ to the believer". The Holy Spirit is also refered to as "the helper" and "the counsellor". But this isn't a full answer...

If I recall correctly, the Holy Ghost came to the church at a time called Pentecost right after Jesus was supposed to have gone back to heaven after coming back to life. He was the comforter sent to stay with Christians so they would not be alone. I guess he is the one that communicates with them now or something. I believe this is in the book of Acts, but I don't have chapter and verse for you.

The Holy Ghost is the part of God that exists inside believers. It is what makes prayer possible. To compare Christian prayer to broadband internet:

Jesus is the webserver, God is the website and the Holy Ghost is the OC3 connection.

Holy Spirit or Ghost whichever you prefer to call him is the third person in the trinity and he is the consoler he is also refered to as the dove but I'm not sure why because he has only revealed himself as wind and fire.And if I recall correctly there was a big meetin with hundreds of people from different places who all spoke a different language and then the Holy Spirt came as fire...I think it might have been wind so don't quote me, but he gave them the ability to speak tongues.Also, if you are confirmed he is sent through your body and you are enriched with his gifts and fruits.
