if he is to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Mark 8:36

Now I was walking down the street one day, casing houses that might make good burglary targets. It was windy, and this piece of paper blew by me. It looked like plain cardstock, folded in half. There were scribbles and duct tape all over it; the type of thing most people would glance at and think of as garbage, but I picked it up. Inside that was what was written, in the big, biblical font and all.

Now I didn't convert or think that the holy lord had spoken to me. I saw it as more of a funky coincidence, but I put the paper in my bag and still carry it to this day. It reminds me to do good in the world, that selfishness and greed truely has no reward.

It also got me to thinking, there really is something good about organized religion. Some people need a reason to do good, a reason not to give up. To realize that we are completely insignifigant in the universe is a brutal realization, but I don't think it's anything the religious types have to fear. If anything, it brings people closer to their faith, gives them a need to believe.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this, I've never posted in this forum, but these thoughts have been floating around in my head for a while. I'm sorry.

That is not true, selfishness and greed provide people with a reason to do what they do. The United States is based off of it. Would you go work just to give away the money you made? I highly doubt it.

As for the part about organised religion, some people go crazy because of it, but i think more people would go crazy without it and loose their drive to do anything in life because they would think it would have no point.

It has no moral reward. Money can't buy happiness.

If you want a secular translation of that verse it might go like this:

The important things in life can't be purchased with money. Those who pursue material things to the exclusion of their humanity will not find happiness.

Sure. But money can certainly buy things that make me happy.
