Satan/The Devil (there is a distinction as described in canonical literature, but that's a different story) is only 'meant' to be evil becaus god painted him that way because god is a dick and his ego is... well, the biggest thing in the universe, basically.

The deal with the Devil is that he and some of his buddies rebelled against god because they rightfully thought he was a prick. And for that he was supposedly cast into hell.

So think about it. The Devil doesn't want to be evil or torture you. He wants to stick it to god. Who's telling you that hell is all fire and brimstone and torture and getting pineapples rammed up your ass? Hmm. Let's see, I think it's the devout bible thumping Christian types, who follow who?
