Here is how I have learnt to meditate
There are four brain levels.
Beta: (awake state)
Alpha: (Start of Subconscious mind What your like when your relaxed or watching TV, or daydreaming.)
Theta: (Deep Subconscious mind, Access through sleep or meditation or sleep)
Delta: (Unconscious mind, Access through sleep or meditation, or anaesthesia)
(More on those brain levels later though.)
1) Complete physical relaxion is the key to entering deeper mind levels. So you should remember that you have no tight clothing on, or any external sounds, that will hinder you from concentrating. However if a mowing lawn mower or clutter noise outside is impossible to escape from use the following phrase:
"External noises do not bother me, infact they help me focus deeper within myself. Each time I hear these noises my mind gets deeper and deeper, my body get lighter and lighter until I am completely relaxed."
If you are having trouble physically relaxing try the below technique.
Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Do that a few times and then take a deep breath and tighten your feet and lower legs. Make them really tight and then with the exhale release the tension. Do that a couple of times, then work your way up your entire body.
feet and lower legs
thighs and lower torso
upper torso & back
arms and hands
neck, shoulders and head
Then tighten the entire body 1/2 strength and release. This should put you into a nice state of relaxation. When you a physically relaxed then you are ready to move onto number 2.
2) It needs to be realised that forcing yourself to meditate will not work. YOU NEED TO LET GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is a nice little story:
___________________________________________
A guy wants to learn karate. He seeks out the greatest karate master in his country. he approaches the master and explains how he really wants to learn karate and the master is pleased. The guy asks the master how long will it take to get really good at karate? the master says 10 years. The guy
thinks for a bit and says what if i try really hard? the master says it would then take 20 years. The guy says what if i TRY really, really hard? the mast says 30 years........
____________________________________________
The act of trying negates itself. Sometimes you just need to let go and let the waters take you where they are most comfortable flowing toward. Sometimes when you want to control something you are acting from a more intellectual frame of mind. This needs to be set free, let go, put aside. As you know theta is much more abstract and non linear. Logic/intellect is really only needed in very small doses to keep you focused and to make sense of what has happened when you get back to alpha/beta. When you can let go and PLAY with the experience you can start to understand the rules. When you understand the rules you can later break them and/or bend them One rule that comes to mind is to always be thankful for whatever experience you have this saves you a seat on the next trip to higher vibratory experiences.
3) Now with your body fully relaxed it is now time to concentrate on your breathing. It doesn't matter what breathing method you use. I personally when I do it is like this:
Deep inhale for: 6 counts
Hold Breath for: 4 counts
Exhale for: 6 counts
After getting into a nice rhythem of doing that the 1st exercise to try is:
4) "Becoming Your Breath"
This involves as you breathe in and out, you are putting your awareness in following what your breath does as you breathe in and out. You attach yourself to it mentally.
When you have "Mastered" that technique, you then can move onto the:
5) "Breathing through all your pores in the body exercise."
This technique is a step up from becoming your breath as it focuses on your awareness being "All over your body".
*As you breathe in imagine your awareness is still your breath, but you are getting the feeling of your breath/awareness getting pulled into every pore of your body.
*As you breathe out, you feel your awareness/breath being pushed out of every pore of your body.
This exercise should start to get you on a deeper level of mind.
6) This technique is exactly the same as the breathing through the pores of your body exercise..Yet now you are to imagine your breath is a golden/white light being breathed in and out of EVERY single pore in your body.
By doing this you if not all ready you will have already started to feel your body vibrate. Focus on those vibrations to get them even more intense
7) Filling the Balloon Exercise
This helps with getting rid of any negative energy you may have while doing the meditation. It is where you see a picture of yourself in your head, and a deflated balloon above you.
As you breathe in and out imagine this balloon filling up with all your negative energy. Dont think of specific's just reject them in bulk. When the Balloon is full, tie it up and release the balloon so it is never seen again.
8) The wall exercise.
Imagine while doing the meditation, that there is a force field, that rejects any negative thoughts before you can even get a chance to think about it.
9) Imagining Your Mind As A Tower Exercise
This involves imagining that your mind is your own personalised golden building, and imagining you are at the top of it.
You step into the lift or elevator and proceeded to travel down it. With each breath you go down the levels of your building, deeper and deeper your mind will follow.
10) Writing on the blackboard task
If your conscious mind gets distracted on thoughts give it a task to complete, while this process of you going down the levels of your building.
What task you may say? How about this.
You standing up at the black board in an empty classroom. You are to draw a circle on the blackboard in your mind.
From there you are to write the letter "A" in that circle nice and neat so all points of the letter are touching the circle. Once that is done, get the duster and rub the letter "A" out while keeping the circle perfectly intact. Then write the letter "B" in the circle and so on...
This whole time while doing this you are imagining yourself exploring your personal building, made out of gold, and finding the deeper you go into your building, the deeper your mind goes.
This exercise isn't needed if you are fully involved in visualising yourself go "down" your minds building.
The End
There it is, they are a couple of the basic techniques in learning to meditate. I will go into a few more intermediate exercises later. I hope this can help anybody wanting to learn to meditate.
Would love to hear anybodies questions or feedback after trying the techniques as well.
Light and Love

go some where with lots of distractions and learn to ignore them or somewhere quite and focus on one aspect of transgression rather than a massive forced movement towards enlightenment

Reality, I tried a couple of those methods upon waking and found that I reached a calm that I hadn't attained before in meditation. It helped out man, thanks a lot! Do you have any information on sort of altered consciousness meditation? The meditation using mantras is for transcendental meditation is it not? Do you know anything about that too?

Iam, I am glad it helped you. There are many ways to get deeper and deeper. But if you had success with breathing the light through your pores exercise. You expand on that technique.
Expanding the light Techqnique.
Once being able to breathe through the pores of your skin with the light. You are now able to expand that light.
As you breathe in imagine all the light being pulled through the pores of your body.
As you breathe out:
1st Imagine your "light body" expand out of all your pores until it has reached 1 metre above your body. Then try to hold your perception from the top of your awareness which is 1 metre above you.
As you breathe in imagine it going back into your body again, then expanding out even further to the top of the room.
Then repeat and expand your light/awareness above your house. And keep going and going until you feel relaxed.
This exercise helping you imagine what things look like. Once this is mastered, you are getting close to trying the infinity breathing technique. Which you might have read from the SSUN Project. But is a little more advanced, but incredibly strong. You lose all sense of even having a body.
FLAME in Heart Exercise.
While in meditation picture a flame in your heart. This flame has now become a permanent part of your being. It reflects the joy and happiness that is inside you and glows even brighter.
The more life tries to take this flame away from you, the stronger it glows until no negativity is in your life at all.
You will remember what you have said to yourself about the flame, but you may forget. But the more you forget, the more you remember, longer the next time, and even longer the next time because this is now a permanent part of you.
SMILING WITH EYES Exercise.
This one doesn't involved meditation, just from now on, speaking to people see the difference of them when you smile at them through your eyes. So Imagine what it is like to be the happiest you have ever been, then keep a straight face, and project that feeling through your eyes.
They will pick up the "vibes" and you will wonder how they can reflect what your feeling just by smiling through your eyes!

The Most Powerful Meditation I know- The infinity breathing Technique.
The 1st workshop teaches a technique to enter the Void of Delta consciousness through the Infinity Breathing technique and become familiar with what it is like to reside both within and without, both as part of and all of, the One. To complete this workshop is to see that when we are connected to the Void we are stepping outside of ourselves and experiencing life as it is in its entirety, instead of only through our 6 senses. The culmination of the 1st workshop will see to it that trainees are then able to step inside and outside of themselves whenever one or the other is most beneficial (both to self and One), and to know which instances are more beneficial for one way of perceiving reality or the other.
In order to engage this technique, the individual must be in perfect health, perfect contentment, and already well-versed in RI and RV techniques, especially the notion of breathing light through all the pores of the body (can also be interpretted as "radiating" the light), having it expand and contract in synchronization with the most natural and relaxed of breathing patterns. This technique expands off of this notion and so it must be accomplished first ideally, although a bypass is possible, especially considering the incredible power of the technique, and so it is very important that anyone and everyone interested in trying the technique do so, regardless of experience.
The Infinity Breathing Technique- Background info
1) When one is lying down, with the entire body at a most comfortable temperature, with no sickness, no aches, no mental distress, and ideally, no outside noise whatsoever, the initial process of relaxing the breathing rate and envisioning the light pulsating in conjuction with the rate of breathing may be begun.
2) When the sinking effect starts to begin, the notion of infinity may be explored freely with the mind - it is important that a true perception of infinity be accomplished at this stage. Infinity allows all things to occur simultaneously at once (this notion will be a bridge to the 2nd workshop), and as such, will easily even allow for a, well, Infinite variety of realities to be occuring all at once, either dimensionally, temporally, or spacially (spacially is key to this technique), such that any atom of this world's construct could be "zoomed" in upon to reveal a universe within it, and then an atom from that world revealing another universe, and so on, and so on, infinitely... as well as, our universe, when "zoomed" out upon, could reveal it to be "nothing more" than an atom within a universe a "level up", and that universe an atom in a universe another level up, and so on and so forth. These of course can continue on infinitely in either direction, and so we realize that while infinity may be able to truly express itself dimensionally and temporally, it is in the spacial sense that this 1/infinity source has given "birth" to 2 (TWO), where all things have henceforth been created from. This technique embraces this notion and commits oneself to it, and it is once this is done that it will work.
3) As one continues to breath the light in and out, they begin to imagine (and this will only work this way, not the other way around.... there is a way to explain this) that as they breathe in, they begin to travel through spacial infinity outwards, starting with a short distance, and increasing in distance with each breath, such that when they breathe in, they go "up one level", and when they breathe out, they go back through their level and "down one level". After awhile, the notion of levels will not be necessary any longer. As infinity becomes more and more embraced, the notion of such a "microscopic" physical reality of just one single level becomes inperceptable as the infinite reality begins to flood into ones consciousness. As a result, the void is entered instantly and ones physical body can no longer be perceived as it is located in a place that is even more microscopic than microscopy itself (Remember, you are breathing in as you travel through spacial infinity macroscopically, and breathing out as you travel through S.I. microscopically... as such, after the first breath in, you are henceforth zooming right past the level where your physical body is, never really going back to it again until you wish to return).
4) When in the void, downloading is faciliated immensely, and exploration of one's higher consciousness greatly expanded. One, after successfully accomplishing this technique, experience such a state of shock of the loss of sense of their physical body (this happened to this body the first time too) that they will instantly snap back to their body - it is very difficult to avoid having this happen during the 1st successful attempt as it is indeed very shocking - but all one need remember is that we are truly and honestly heading to a place (and those there have already brought some of it "here") where much, much more unbelievable things are possible, and then one should not be shocked about such a thing, it is in fact a very natural state that many have engaged in for, likely, thousands of years, and that one should be quite the opposite - their most comfortable - here, rather than shocked.
5) After this, the 2nd or 3rd successful attempt should ideally result in one's ability to experience the void at their leisure, and reap all the benefits that are associated with exploration of such an ego-less place where one's self, especially their physical self, is quite litterally, the last thing on their mind. Everything but! Once one feels truly comfortable here, the tools will present themselves, express through the large categories of RV and RI, and much else will likely follow suit with no need to concentrate on individual tasks at all (this is also a bridge to the 2nd work shop - aptly named "Automation, a Final Result of RV/RI Work".

The Infinity Breathing Technique
________________________________
Steps for the Technique:
0) Suggestion - Play some suitable background noise/music, my recommendations are (feel free to add recommendations!): The Drone Zone, you can find this Winamp Internet Radio Station if you search for it on Shoutcast.com, The Theta/Delta CD that accompanies the RI course, and The Mind Meditation audio files that were made available in the recommendations section.
1) Preparation - With optional background music playing quietly, otherwise, with no outside noise (or as little as possible), lie down, flat on back, head on pillow(s) (or flat if you prefer), under a blanket if it is cold, in as good of health as possible, no mental or emotional concerns, perfectly content, sleepy but not too sleepy, on a comfortable bed, and begin doing the light-breathing technique if you know how to do it. If not, begin breathing in and out slowly, in an effort to slow your breathing, your heartbeat and the natural pulse of the body, pausing between breathing both in and out.
2) Contemplation - At this point, the mental "realization" of infinity is engaged, such that our continuously expanding perception of infinity is achieved by linking it to our breath. Before linking them, we may try to imagine how vastly incomprehensible infinity is all on it's own, ie., imagining oneself travelling forever in a single direction of space. Now, in the case of this technique, we will use the concept of imagining oneself expanding and becoming infinitely larger as long as our breath in will last, and imagining oneself contracting and becoming infinitely smaller as long as our breath out will last. We will always build upon the point we had gotten to in our previous set of in-breaths and out-breaths, such that we will always perceive ourselves as having travelled further into macro or micro-scopia with each consecutive breath than the time before.
3) Actualization - Now that the technique is properly perceived and all variables have been set in favour of the attempt succeeding, we begin with a breath out, and a small-scale association to go with it. We will imagine that as we breathe out, we are shrinking down to the size of an atom, and we watch everything around us "zoom by" as we do so. We see ourselves as being a speck. This can be used as the "starting point" that we will never return to until just before the end of the technique. The breathing-micro/macroscopia association truly begins from this point on. At the first breath in, we will imagine ourselves growing from the point of being an atom all the way to encompassing this entire planet, solar system, or universe, depending on how far we can imagine ourselves expanding while we breathe in as much as we can, as slowly as we can. The next breathe out will bring us well past the atom we were starting out as, to a point where we can see that this atom in fact represents the "casing" of a universe one level "below" our own. We will zoom right past it to the point where what had seemed so small before now seems incredibly large, continuing on until we are out of breath. The next breath in will work the same way but in the opposite direction. We will zoom right past the brink of the universe to a point where it seems as an atom inside of another universe one level "up". The next set of breaths will bring us "two" levels down and up, then "three", and so on and so forth.
4) Metamorphosis - This final step, in a sense, "actualizes the actuality". It is crucial to perceive the "flip" points during this technique, where the very small suddenly seem very large and vice versa, because you must at some point remove the notion of zooming in or out X amount of levels, and simply zoom in and out as far as possible, always further, feeling the "flip" points as "ridges" as though you were sliding through a cylinder with performations, kind of like a cylindrical Ruffles Chip! These ridges will then begin to smoothen, as One and Infinity begin to collapse into one another, and by this point, if successful, you will surely not be feeling your physical body anymore. You are essentially engaging this technique to pull the "Two" (I have talked about this in other recent posts) back into "One", by making two Infinities into One Infinity, and it is by doing so that you can enter the Void, the source and destination of all reality, more easily this way than perhaps through some other techniques.
5) Id - If the metamorphosis is successful, your ego, now without anything to associate itself to, transforms into Id, and you can experience the subconscious bliss of total connectness with a kind of consciousness that will become less foggy and hazy with practise and experience. In this place, if one can maintain it, the source of what makes RV and RI work is contained, and it is here best we can see how seamless they are and how they can be combined.
