And she is grounded... Her mom is forcing her to go to this one _tag (youthgroup) thing and she wants me to go with her. It would be one of the few chances of hanging out outside of school for the next few weeks.

The only problem is that I am not religious at all. I really don't believe in a god or God or whatever. I also believe that a bunch of thing happen that I can not explain. I do believe that there is a god and that he "does" wonderful stuff. I also believe that there was Jesus, but he was just a kind and wise man. Just past things in my life have led me to believe what I believe.

I know the basis of everything and all that jazz but I was wondering... Should I go to this _tag thing. There is a sermon and worship and everything like that. But should I, even if it's just for my girlfriend. If I go there and pronounce that I am not a christian, I am guessing that youth pastors and more people will be like, "He's not worth it because his life is empty and without God." and all that bull shit.

TOTSE Please help!

I'm not very religious, but back in like 7th grade I went to a friend's youth group for a while, and it was fun, even if I didn't belong to the Evangelical Church. I left, though, because they started putting down other religions, even other sects of Christianity. I'm Catholic, and I know some of the shit we do is kinda stupid, but it's not right to preach that other religions are wrong. Just beware, that the people running the youth group may be intolerant.

Go engage them in a lively debate. It's always fun to argue with those who disagree with you--sharpens the mind.

Fear not. Most youth services will have significantly less religious bullshit than you likely imagine. You should definitely go just for the chance to spend time with your girlfriend and make a proper impression on her mom. A short sermon and a prayer (perhaps two, one now and one later) and then on to stupid socialization and activities. However, if inquired about your own spirituality, lie your ass off.

Explaining your (admittedly ambiguous) viewpoint is only asking for trouble. You can't debate with these people, because they are dumb as hell. And your lack of belief is something to be proud of internally, not when surrounded by the enemy. Take my advice if you want to make a good impression:

Be friendly (but not ridiculously friendly) with the pastors and the other youth members and you'll be fine. Most important of all is to make a good impression on any friends of your girlfriends family while you're there.

The general mindset of the older christian types (if you encounter any) is cynical and conservative. Act like you have your head on straight and conform to their shitty dogma to appease them.

The young folk attending these sort of things are dumb as fuck (for the most part) and won't bother you about your spirituality. Just play pool with them or whatever and pray when you need to, and you'll look fine in their eyes.

This is only if you want to do this the right way, however.

You should go. I doubt they'll chastise you for not being christian. I think you'd do better to keep your lack of faith to yourself on account of, if you tell them they'll probably try to convert you. But, they may not. However, I highly doubt they're going to come right out and ask you if you believe in Jesus Christ as your lord and savior as soon as you walk in the door. They'll probably just assume that you do because you're there.

And what they don't know wont hurt them. Plus, it could be an enriching experience for you, and if not, you still got to hang out with your girlfriend.

Cheers,

Lost

So she's oppressing your religious freedom? http://www.totse.com/bbs/tongue.gif If you like her a lot, what can I say, you deserve it. Or else, just try to tell her that you need your own space
