Back in June of last year, Milk and Innards posted a rather long list of Biblical contradictions (from EvilBible.com).
Many of the most obvious ones stem from the fact that Judaism is an evolved religion. The early, rather primitive Jews worshipped fire, as did many other tribes. They invented a fire god, called him Jehovah. This is the fire and brimstone, jealous, mean, cruel deity portrayed in much of the OT, especially Exodus. (Remember Moses and the burning bush?)
Later, a more loving deity revealed himself (her/it/them/whatever--deity transcends gender)), and was known as Elohim. This is the equivalent of the Wiccan's male side of the goddess, the Native American's Great Spirit, and what some modern folks refer to as the Unified Field of Consciousness.
In general, OT references to an angry and vengeful god refer to Jehovah, not Elohim.
