To create one must destroy, to destroy one must create. The universe is a massive recycling plant...cancer's one of the tools used to break down larger particles that get used as nourishment for new life. Same with genocide, murder, natural disaster and any other death-dealing event.

One answer I've heard is that it helps "regular people" (as in those without cancer, in this case) to appreciate what they have.

The Manichean heretics would agree with your implied point. I don't.

Skin cells are suppposed to die--if not, we would all look like mummies. All cells have genetic coding to determine their individual lifespan. A cancer cell has simply forgotten how to die, and in many cases, we brought in on ourselves. Most people who die of lung cancer CHOSE to smoke. And the number of carcinogenic chemicals which we as a society have placed in the environment grows and grows--something else to thank to Bush administration for, in gutting the EPA.

But someone else's point is well taken. Many of the challenges we face are there to provide us with opportunities to display just who we are but how we react.

If we were all born in an enlightened state of unity consciousness, we would have nothing to do.

The whole point of life is evolution.
