Re: Name this religion
Christianity (dies laughing)
nah I'm kidding, its Jainism, like the guy above me said. They're an offshoot of hinduism much like buddhism with a fair bit of overlap so you weren't far off. Buddhism's guiding principle is to help all sentient beings happy and push them towards enlightenment, so it is respectful of all life (or should be, well practiced). To correct all mighty sammy, animals in hinduism are subhuman, they are humans who were so bad in life that they didn't deserve to be people, so it is clearly not respectful of all creatures.

Im sooo sorry i didnt know what hinduism preaches that all i knew is that i saw "bubble boy" and saw cows were sacred to them animals are humans (or something like that) cow=sacred cow=animal animal=sacred but after you say this "animals in hinduism are subhuman" you have just destroyed 10 years of attempted enlightenment.

I've never really understood the reason why cows are so sacred, I know that Gandhi used cows as a symbol to represent a united India but other then that I draw a blank. I prolly just got myself reincarnated as a tree (subanimal, karma's a bitch)

cows are sacred in india because at some point killing them would have resulted in the starvation of a large portion of the population. it's a religious belief emerged from economic policy....like all religious beliefs.

Re: Name this religion
As far as I am aware Buddhism holds all life sacred. Hence the amusing but slightly offensive Kleenex ad (where the Buddhist monk has a crisis of conscience as the tissues KILL 99% of all viruses).

Re: Name this religion
As far as I'm aware, most every religion holds life as sacred. Conceptions of the opposite attitude are typically based around the spiritual life taking a more sacred position than the physical life (especially in sacrificial religions).
