The Deer Hunter:Question.

I just finished watching the Deer Hunter and i was wondering what that symbolic moment when Micheal goes deer hunting and has a clean shot at a deer and dosen't take the shot? I can't seem to think of a good reason to explain this so I thought id ask you guys.
