The term God-of-the-gaps argument usually refers to an argument that assumes an act of God as the explanation for an unknown phenomenon, and is a variant of an argument from ignorance. Commonly such an argument can be reduced to the following form:
There is a gap in scientific knowledge.
The gap is filled with acts of a god (and therefore also proves, or helps to prove, the existence of said god).
One example of such an argument might be as follows: "Because science can't figure out exactly how apples fall, it must be God who causes it to happen."
God appears to have been shrinking for the past 500 years or so. Christians no longer believe that the Earth is the center of the universe. Most christians do not believe the world is about 6,000 years old.
Face it. God is being cut down to size with an axe made of science. Thiests only have left what science can not yet explain. Your god is a God of the gaps. Enjoy the space we left for him b/c it will only get smaller.
