Post The amish

My views on the ideas of the amish religeon

ok first off for those who dont know them :

- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amish check the wiki page

For those clever enough to have an idea who they are (i hope most of you) =

just something i read on the wiki page i thought id bring up...

they dont use churchs; they worship in their houses because of a quote from the bible "The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands..." (Acts 17:24)

The meaning of The word "Temple" by the oxford dictionary is ;

• noun a building devoted to the worship of a god or gods.

If they worship at home.. as in inside a house ..which they do , it becomes a temple, they also build these "temples" with their hands as they dont belive in machinery, so all their praying is going to waste.. if anything it seems that god endorses our modern lives...theres nothing wrong with evolution... if evolution wasnt meant to happen wed all be living in caves still.

this isnt a rant about how much i love god by the way im neither here or there about it ... but if there was a god ... well you get the drift im sure.

I wasn't aware that the Amish don't 'believe in machinery'...

They're just technologically impaired! (thanks Weird Al).

They use machinery but only of the more primitive variety (ie whats driven by hand, animal or force of nature).

The Elders decide what and which technology may be used. The different groups (old order, dunkers etc )vary somewhat in this regard.

It also depends really, like Menonites(sp?) can drive cars and do alot of things that Amish can't. Amish can however use oil in lamps and to run their ceiling fans and stuff. I'v been in an Amish house while on vacation.

The thing that most people wouldn't realize is that most of the Amish are millionairs. They have had pretty much everything they own from being passed down through the generations, their farm, their land, their buggy :P

As for their house being a temple, what it really comes down to is if you label it a temple or not. These people live in their houses as well as pray in them. If praying within any building automatically makes it a temple, than oxford would be right. The bible says god doesn't dwell in man made temples, so the way I look at it you call it a temple if its a building specifically built to go to worship and pray.

That Bible quote just means you don't need to be in a Temple to worship God...

What does the growing and smoking of pot have to do with imperfection?

Amish society isn't so much about religion per se, but tradition and lifestyle. For instance, they tend to avoid getting immunized, not because it is forbidden by their religion, but just because they choose not to do it.

However, some years ago, there was a polio epidemic among the Amish in Pennsylvania --I worked for the PA Dept of Health at the time--and once we sat down with the leaders and explained the situation, the elders agreed that they didn't want to harm their neighbors by possibly passing polio on to them, so we set up a special immunization program for them, and the disease never reached outside of the local Amish community.
