Who was John of Patmos?

Alot of christians say he wasn't "John", so who exactly was he? I would like to read other things by him, because he's the only person in the bible, who actually predicted anything, that has recently (in the 70's) been proven with archeology (he actually predicted it, and what he wrote, wasn't truth when he wrote it). If you ask me, if he had other writings, there should be a whole religion based purely on what he wrote. He says something like "I am John, brother of Jesus", wich would really mean "the John" if he actually wrote that. But yeah, I want to read more stuff this guy wrote, so to anyone saying it wasn't actually John, please give some ideas of who he could have been, because wether I'm a christian or not, the guy was able to tell alot of stuff that there wasn't much of a way for him to know. So something was going on with him.
