Don't worry about /dev being cluttered.
You seem to have four *cdrom*. cdrom and cdrom1, cdrw and dvd.
Are you sure you are trying mounting the right one?
Also, is there some weird permission/s on the files?
There doesn't seem to be any hd* or sd*, but I'm not quite familiar with the 2.6.x.
An ls -all on dev will give us which cdrom points to which drive.
(cdrom and cdrom1 [...] are simply symlinks to the *real* devices).
If for some reason no hd* or sd* shows up, try using single-user mode.

Had to delete some of the files names with multiple numbers, but tryied to keep all the unique ones. (to fit in post)
I tried telinit 1, then came up with a screen, i didn't know what to do then, so i resumed, but now both my 2 hard drives have now dismounted... (Though i haven't restarted yet to find out if it is perminant)

Ah, just reboot, you'll be taken back to the normal run level.
Read /etc/inittab .
Use /dev/dvd for the dvd drive, and cdrwl for the cd-only drive.
Therefore the command is `mount -t iso9660 drive /mount/point`.
If it doesn't work it will most likely print some error, you know what to do.

Re: /dev/ file overload. Some advice please.
If you're having trouble with DMA on your drives, use hdparm to switch it, to make this permanent, putting it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local will change the drive parameters everytime the machine boots. First chek your drives with hdparm -Ii though to make sure it isn't already set.

I think this is normal. At least in all the systems I've used there's been at least as many /dev/ files. Here's the contents of mine right now:

Re: /dev/ file overload. Some advice please.
It may have been normal with devfs, that's fucking archaic, we use udev now, which create devices on demand. Come on guys, upgrade your kernels to something in the 1980's range at least. I know you guys are running Ubuntu and Gentoo with broken ass flags.
Mine definitely does not look like that:

/dev/pts/0 is also the only pseudo terminal file I have, which is the one I'm running commands in.

So which Kernel uses udev's then? I was thinking about switching to Fedora.. but very much like ubuntu...
