Why? It was out of season, it had no reason to bear figs, but still BLAM! What is the significance of this story, it seems too ridiculous and out of place.

The fig tree represented Israel who had fallen into apostacy. It was just a prophetic gesture of Jesus... The apostles didn't understand it at the time, either.
