Sunni beleive that whoever is best suited for the job should lead the Islamic world, Shia beleive that whoever rules the islamic world should be by descendants. In a nutshell, Shia are monarchists, and Sunni are democrats.

Edit; The Sunni beleive that these descendants are held up like Gods in the Shias minds, which would be paganism, like the mortal sin in Islam. "There is one and only God, and his prophet is Mohammad." Its complicated because there is no direct descendants of Mohammad, only like cousins and shit.

Shia beleive that Sunnis aren't properly acknowledging the holyness of the descendants and are therefore giving a finger to Allah.
