i read an article in my local paper on meditation and thought i might give it a try. well after about 10 min. i started to get really depressed and sad but, at the same time really relaxed. If you could plz tell me how you meditate or what you concentrate on that would be a big help.

P.S. I was concentrating on current events maybe not the best thing lol

best not to meditate on negatives http://www.totse.com/bbs/smile.gif Most practitioners seem to agree the best methods aim to have no thoughts at all in the mind. The most effective method I've tried is to concentrate on the inputs of all five senses at once. It's hard but after some practice I found that it was a real thought stopper and brought a sense of being a/the 'presence'. Thinking about it later I felt that it demonstrated the difference between the observer and the observed, between the thought and the thinker. Who am I if I am still present when thought stops? How can the observer also be the observed?

Another interesting method is to concentrate on sound, all sound, without making any judgements or having any thoughts on the sound, letting the sound flow, not dweling on any of it(handy if you ar ein a noisy environment). If you listen very intently(eyes closed or at the uppper horizon) it is as though it's even possible to hear the buzz of one's own energy. All sorts of pictures and colours appear in the mind's eye, automatically. It's important not to think about them at the time, let it flow, relax.

You don't need any particular posture, nor does it need to take a lot of time, so long as you reach the state of no-thought you will experience a changed state of awareness. It may sound simple however the experience can be profound.

I have an experience with meditation.

So one night I sat down I did it. I breathed deeply and thought of nothing. Then once I knew I was 'there', I sorted all my problems out, and I told my self what I was going to do and not do.

I can't tell you what I felt like. Sadly, I have never been able to focus like that again.
