Who in here has read the holy books?

No I'm not a regular here. But when I browse through this forum I see endless quotes being posted and then someone proving that those quotes aren't even real. So I'm wondering: who in MGCBTSOOYG has read a holy book suck as the Bible or Qu'ran?

Bible: Read in all common and some not so common versions , translated (into german/eng),studied.Also in Koine blah blah blah (I studied for the priesthood).

Quran: Read

Book of Mormon/Pearl: Read

E.G.White (almost all I think): Read

Watchtower publications (the really old stuff too , that JW's never read)/Russell:Read

Talmud (babylon):Read

LXX: Read

Most of the Gnostic Gospels:Read

Gospel Of Thomas: Read and Studied at length

I think thats enough but there is a hella lot more.

I've read through various incarnations on the Bible, and several second-hand sources summarising Gnostic belief. I'm yet to find a translated copy of the Dead Sea Scrolls, otherwise I would enlighten myself a little more.

Also, Jack, isn't the Gospel of Thomas a non-canon text?

Yes, however it differs from the other 'gnostic gospels' in that many scholars believe it stems from a source older than the canon.gospels.

Infact, upon reading it , you don't really need to be much of a scholar to realise that may even contain the (as near as possible) genuine sayings of jesus.

The debate about it is more about the various 'gnostic' type sayings it also contains. How 'gnostic' was judaism at that point/was jesus?

hey, a preacher told me one time, a lot of scholars and just people studying the Bilble learn german because of some translation thing, what am I thinking of?

Also, I read about a guy and he split his life into 3 15 year section. The first one he learned all the langauges that had anything to do with the Bible, the second was studying, and the third was writing. Do you know who this is? I can't find his name again.

I think he meant that a lot of scholars used to have to learn German inorder to have access to the best and cutting edge studies. For many years German was the language of theology (as it was also I believe for chemistry too).

Pick up any serious English work on theology/biblicals tudies and you'll find it peppered with German jargon. For example 'Sitz im Leben', 'Zeitgeist','Redakteur'.

Thats because 1.modern critical study of the bible started in Germany and 2. German is a far more precise language than English and this makes studying the bible easier in German than English.

However these days there is little need to actually learn German, although i always found it a great help.No idea about your other question.

I'm currently reading the bible and have read a lot.

I've been reading Gnostic texts.

And I've read the Principia Discordia.

I've read the Bible and I'm in the process of reading the Quran.

Both have great teachings for humanity, however there are a lot negative things in them also.
